Im new to revit and i am trying to model roof mounted solar hotwater panels.

I have tryed using a hosted family but the panel will not mount ontop of the roof surface rather it places the base of the panel on the underside of the roof. It does not seem to change when the thickness of the roof structure is changed. I would really appreciate it someone could walk me through the process of creating a roof mounted family that allows my panel to be placed on the external roof surface.

Thanks for your help.

what i have done, in this instance is use the generic line based family, to host on a roof. i would assume you are using the out of the box, solar panel? another option and i am unsure that it would work, is offset the solar panel from the roof plane and see if that does the trick.

I have found that sometimes items like this need to be placed in 3d. When I place face based families in plan they have a tendancy to snap to the side of the countertop instead of the top... Dont know why but I cant get them to host correctly unless I go to 3d.

Might be something to try.

Have a look at the Skylight Window in the standard library... you can open it and edit it or create a new window based on this this... it's constrained to a roof object (look at its properties in Family Category and Paramters under Settings). Note Always vertical is unchecked.

I would just create a solar panel based on this family...

 Just an idea

I have tried placing it in 3d and it seems to make no difference. Ill take a look at the skylight family and see if that works. Thanks.
