I had a look in the book AUTOCAD COMPLETE
NO NURBS as far as I can see
but there is a butterfly chair!!! A tensile structure
It is made with Edgesurface creating the Mesh
But before you can write edgesurface on the command prompt
you have to do four arcs
you use to connect the edgesuface to.
Have a try!
I also Googled for: autocad edgesurface
only two links!!!
This one:
http://www.designcommunity.com/messages/21646.html
And the other one to Autocad Forum
beta.network54.com/Forum/13562?it=4
was dead...
I also Googled for: autocad mesh tutorial
I found 7100 links
Here is one:
http://www.caddigest.com/subjects/autocad/tutorials/select/080403_parsai_3d_meshes.htm
And you learn to make a bottle.... Listen to this - Good Luck! NO USE NURBS IN 3DS INSTEAD
AutoCAD 3D Modeling: 3D Meshes
August 4, 2003
3D Polygon meshes are surfaces that consist of several flat faces. There are some commands that can create such surfaces. One of the rarely used commands is called 3DMESH. This command is difficult to use but very powerful. It is mainly used by programmers. Here you will use the command to create a surface. Later the PEDIT command will be used to close and smooth the 3D mesh.
Notes:
►; This tutorial is designed for AutoCAD 2004 though might be applicable for other releases.

1. Download r16_3d_meshes.dwg
Note: If you are using AutoCAD 2002 or an earlier release download r15_3d_meshes.dwg

I made it in autocad
It was no problem...
First I made a point with a z-coordinate
Command: POINT 0,0,2000
another POINT: 0,0,0
and then
3DPOLY between the two points
and some rectangle on the groundlevel
and copy the 3dpoly to the opposite side of the rectangle
Then four 3DPOLY:s to construct the tensinets edges in 3D
see the image.
Then at the commandprompt
EDGESURF
and pick the four 3DPOLYS
and the net is automatically constructed
Save as .dwg
Import it into Revit
a camera view and then render - see the image
OK! It functions for this simple structure
but 3DStudio is much better if doing something little more compliated....

Here is the image showing the EDGESURF
between four 3DPOLY:s as edges.
And then the net in a cameraview in Revit
And the rendering of the cameraview
You cannot use long file-names on Revitcity???
That is why I have to upload the image once more!!!

Admittedly this is not a strong suit of the current version of Revit. Perhaps the future versions will provide a more elegant means to achieve these ideas within Revit natively.
We discussed tensile roofs for a project I was involved with almost a year ago now. The thread is at AUGI and here is the url if you are interested. You need to join (free) to see it.
http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=1637&highlight=Tensile
The image I posted is of the tensile roof which was made with a swept profile along a sketched perimeter (the base of the tent, rectangular) and voids cut out the corners to imply the "tension" elements at the edges.
It was satisfactory for the imagery we were looking for at the time. Not very effective for construction documents probably... We would probably have BirdAir or similar involved at CD time anyway and we would rely on "buildable" documentation as part of their consulting effort.

Try Edgesurf in Acad.
Fairly easy compared to create family in revit but I think there are problems in this method which are:
1. We can't add any parameter for the membrane we import from Acad for example change the material or colour of the membrane.
2. Must to be careful with the scale when importing dwg to Revit. I was having some slight problems on that but I think this should be minor case.
Just have a look at AUGI forum thread but my pc crashed, not too sure how you all work in toposurface.. will find out more later..
btw, Mr. GG..What is NURBS? just a bit brief idea! thanks

NURBS - Non-uniform Rational B-Spline
http://www.cadforum.cz/cadforum_en/slovnik.asp?trm=NURBS
It is a kind of math
to construct smooth forms easy. It has its drawbacks too. It is not the absolute thing, but good. Much better than edgesurf in autocad and much much better than the crap you got in Revit... I understand why Autodesk is not implanting it in Revit.... No proböems to them, but for some reason - money - they do not want too. Perhaps they have to if they want to compete with other CAD-applications like Catia
http://www.aecbytes.com/feature/Gehry_Study.htm
You can search on it on Google: NURBS 3D-Studio-Max
It is about moving and adjusting values for points and their attraction perhaps.
You have to experiment with it yourself
And as my image shows it is really easy to do all form of tensile structures with NURBS
Hope your computer will get better soon
Hope to se some tensile structures from you!!!

Thanks Mr. GG.
Eventually I did come out with one parametric tensile membrane (Modular) family but it is in the office's computer now. It is sort of like the 1st and 2nd tensile membrane that you produced only I put in the parameter into it so that it can be adjusted in wing length, width & angles.
I think it is sort of an unfinished product with not proper connection edges etc. If I have a better family, definitely I will upload them onto revitcity.
