Basically I have no experience in the formula writing features of family parameters. Maybe a quick explanation on how they work would be good for me. Anyone? Ok basically I want to create a sink family that has three or more types of sinks built in including the void extrusions that would cut out countertop. Cuurently I have this family of sinks nested into the countertop family to speed up the input process. Is this possible to work? I have tried with visible parameters (?) and it works except that the biggest void extrusion always leaves its mark no matter if that sink is on or off. I was thinking that maybe somehow using a formula or two that I could toggle a checkmark off or on and all other sinks with their repective void extrusions for cutting the counter would dissapear and the countertop would then only have the hole of the sink I wanted cutting it. I hope this makes sense. can anyone help me with this???? thanks for your time in advance.

Take a look at this family and you can see where I used several visibility "on/off" forumlas to get everything to work right.  I don't have time to explain everything now, but maybe later if you're still completely lost as to how it works.  You should be able to apply this concept to multiple void/solid extrusions in one family.  It's not a great example, but it does show how this can work.  note the '(not)GFI' script in the formula for one of the visibility options.  It's just a matter of making sure the right visibility boxes are on and off at the right time.  BBL

HTH!

Ok I am lost. lol. Sorry about this. I am attaching a file for my sink that I want to have 3 or 4 types of sinks in it. This is then loaded into another counterttop family that I would like to be able to select per instance of which sink shows up and which ones are hidden along with their corresponding void extrusions to cut out the different sized sink holes. maybe i need to just create all 3 sinks as seperate families first and then insert them as components into my countertop family and then use type parameters to control which sink will be visible and automatically hide the others. does this make any snese? I feel like I am not explaining it very well.

Gotcha, just requires an extra passing of parameters from one family to another.  I'll take a look at it when I get home tonight if I have a chance.  Until then, I recommend looking at the tutorial on creating Nested Arrays to see how to pass parameters from one family to another.  It's a good one to read anyhow. Smile

Everything makes sense.  i think you're on the money with creating the sink families seperate, thn loading them in and contolling the visibility on the family inside the countertop family.  This will be much easier to manage.

Till then, keep on truckin!

Thanks in the meantime i will review that nested array article you pointed out. I know this seems like a very complex family but if i can just grasp getting this one right it will set me up to create even better more complex families later which will help "automate" some of our offices work better in Revit. I will wait to hear from you again....

Do you have the sinks in a seperate family by chance?  If so can you email them to me?

Nevermind, I can work with what's in the family.  I'm making a video for you to wathc.  Should be easiest.  Unfortunately, there will be no narration.

jmqrsq,

I got the first part of the movie, but can't find a suitable host for it that won't deres it.  I'm trying youTube right now and will be trying my personal server if that fails (my server is a bit slow so you would want to download and then view as opposed to streaming from my server).  I'll keep you updated.

Attached is my sink family thus far for you to look at.

jmqrsq,

That is certainly a nice way to do the visibility control.  I have never thought of doing it that way but that is much cleaner than what I did in the video and it seems to work better with the entire family.  Congrats on figuring that one out!
