In this screen shot, I am in my 3D view and tried to create an extrusion but it doesnt even give me the 'check' or 'x' option at the top to complete my sketch.

I don't work with pirated software so I'm not sure how that all works but have you tried creating an in-place component in a different project to see if it works or if it is just the one you are trying to change?

I have tried both editing a component from a project I have worked on in the office as well as trying to edit a new component I just created and neither of them work.
Also, only the 2013 version is pirated...The 2012 is from Autodesk

I have uninstalled the pirated version of revit and am now only using the version from Autodesk and still have the same problem. The only 2 things I can think could be the cause of the problem is 1) I am not installing the program properly and 2) it doesnt work right on Windows 8.
Here are some screen shots. I have created a simple generic model and completed the extrusion and then completed the generic model, but in the final screen shot when i go to edit the model, there is no button that says 'edit'
This is driving me crazy and the program is unusable without this...hope someone can help!

That is your problem... Per the System Requirements, Revit Architecture 2013 is not currently supported to run on Windows 8

I know this is an old post, however I recently came across this when I had this issue in Revit 2017.2. Posting this in case someone else comes across this post like I did!
In my situation, we had a model in place generic model that could not be editted. The "Edit Family" option was greyed out. Turns out the reason for this was that the element was pinned. Unpinning the element allowed it to be editted normally.

Maybe my post will be helpful. We had this issue and I found this thread but then I realised the reason was that the other computer only had Revit LT which does not have the options of model in place. Perhaps that is why he couldnt directly edit my created model in place although he could extend it etc. What we had was 3 round holes on a rectangle and he wanted to move the holes which I would normally do with "edit extrusion" inside "edit model in place" but he was not able to do so.
