Ah, I thought you just wanted to duplicate a material to assign a different asset or to assign a new one that you created.  Obviously changing the base does affect all materials that use that definition.

thank you for the thread.. i actually had the same problem trying to figure out for like an hour how to duplicate the material without ahving the original screw up.. this is one of the things in revit thats complicating for no reason

I was about to say the same thing. You have to change the asset names as well, otherwise different materials read from the same assets.

Assuming it's a default Revit material your're trying to modify, you can also add it to the project again from the materials list and  rather than replace the existing one, choose to keep each separate. This automatically creates duplicate assets.

The problem is that when you duplicate a material in version 2013, the render appearance is not duplicated. You must change the render appearnce seperatly for any dupliacte materials. Not sure who thought this was a great idea.

in revit 2014 u can duplicate the material, rename it and change it with "Replaces this Asset" (u have to create there a favourite)
