Hi Everyone,

My office just hoped in the revit madness and we are tinkering to do a barrel roof like the image below on one of our projects-any chance that someone might be able to suggest how we can do this type of roof using revit?

Regards to all and thanks in advance.

okay fred- here i go again- watch the rocks and bottles fly at me.. on RARE occasions you CAN get a bump image of those barrel roof tiles to look okay.. it depends very much on what you want the rendering for.. if it's just a construction model to see how everything will build- then a bump image roof is sufficient.. and construction models are really what revit is all about.. BUT if you want your construction model to also be an enduring promotional presentation- then i highly suggest you MODEL those barrel tiles.. not really all that hard to do with the array tool.. fred- now watch them all throw bricks at me for what i'm about to tell you.. after all these years we have a lot of revit users that know how to do everything and anything with revit- BUT what most of them don't have is the ability to use logic and reason- and THAT is what revit REALLY craves..

fred- you need to understand something about the revit city web site.. first i'll say that revit city is a great site- no doubt about that- and since it came first- it has attracted a quarter million members.. but the site was started- and still is run by- amateurs.. they don't know how to keep the site running properly- and as a result many of the features simply don't work.. the site is full of bugs and viruses and constantly goes offline.. if you send the site a message about something not working- they will either ignore you or deny it.. it's been going on like this for years and years and these people will never change anything.. so THAT is the reason your image attachment did not post..

Actually, if Vector would read the posts, he would see that we recognize that this site does not work with Google chrome or the latest version of mozilla.  But it works just fine with IE 8 or Mozilla - Firefox 3.6.23.   Since Vector is still so high on the "classic" interface and Revit 9, you think he would still be using one of the programs that works.

I also want to correct Vector - There are NO viruses on this site.  In 2010, there were two successful, malicious attacks on the site.  The site operators closed the site, removed the malicious code and upgraded the software to hopefully prevent future attacks but nobody can guarantee that.  The operators also apologized to the users for this problem and gave pointers on how to correct any problems.   This was the ONLY time this has happened to the site since inception.  I think that is a very good record for a free site like this one.

fred- just like i told you- nothing buy denial- LOL.. i post constantly about how i use only win 7 sp1 with the default browser and revit 2011 update 2- and year after year we all get this SAME response: "google chrome"- duh.. actually- apparently- one of these moderators must LOVE google chrome- and not only uses it with their denial- but also uses the opportunity to PROMOTE google chrome- LOL- duh.. and that's just about the ONLY "pointers" anyone will ever get when they report all the things that don't work at revit city.. half of the images ANYONE tries to post in a thread won't get posted- half of the comments ANYONE tries to post to the images in the gallery won't get posted.. but in a site operators' mind- it's because you must be using a different version of revit- or google chrome- or firefox 3.6.23 instead of firefox 3.6. whatever- duh- LOL.. at least they know their firefox versions..

why in the world would anyone deal with a third party browser when internet explorer 8 is already there in windows 7? makes no sense to me.. what kind of logic is that?

Because people who make viruses target the majority, and the majority use windows machines, and the majority of those use IE, meaning most viruses are geared toward exploiting IE.

incidentally I use firefox 7 and have no problem with uploading images.

Hub- since you mentioned something about the revit classic UI i think i'll make a comment on that for anyone interested.. it appears to me that autodesk had plans during their work on revit 2011 to have an option for users to choose which UI they wanted to use.. but possibly just before 2011 was released they decided not to put that switch up-front.. i say this because there are so many nice new touches to the classic UI for 2011.. the 2011 UI actually works better than it ever did before.. sure you still don't have the shortcut keys- (although you do still have those menu shortcuts- i've always used the mouse anyway)- and you still have to convert detail lines in a different view to get them to show up as model lines in a 3D view- but that's nothing.. oh yeah and another little thing is putting dimensions on angles and radians- for that you just make the temporary dimensions permenant or just draw them in with detail lines and text- very rare.. i have infinitely dissected that 2011 native UI and it is flawless.. the ribbon is very attractive and easy to like- and i have used the ribbon for many short periods of time and recently i started a project with the ribbon and used it until the project was about 90% complete.. i got so used to the ribbon that the classic "looked" ugly to me.. then i suddenly realized that i had forced myself into denial about the poor performance of the ribbon thoughout the whole project.. that's when i turned off the ribbon UI.. as i got back into using the native UI- i couldn't stop say WOW to myself about how much better everything worked.. i seen the classic UI on revit 2012 with my own eyes- but i don't know where the switch is or how it would work.. BTW- i have used 2012 partially on a couple of projects and i don't think there is anything different about it than 2011 except it has all that new collaboration and worksharing stuff that i don't use.. i just do residential- and "logically"- 2011 may be all i need until a future 3D construction modelling program debuts.. revit is the first but certainly not the last.. i don't think you are able to use logic Hub- and you will probably only react to this with whatever condition your feelings are in at this time- but that's okay- feelings are valuable too.. i  just enjoy understanding more and more about revit..
