Hi, I'm just starting this class on Revit. I'm a student at South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department / Information Technology Training Center (ITTC). The school, we are told can't afford the books for us for this software and the instructor is learning the program with us. He told us to find a house plan and figure out how to draw it. So I'll be posting a lot on this site for the next month. Thanks for all of your help.

It would be cool if you had a thread sticky in "Newbies" for each state. So we can sign in on our state and talk to others in our state.

Revit has a steep learning curve, but rewarding in the end, as most things worth learning. Use this site, look on YouTube, quite a few vids on there. Also learn to uses your help menu. The help menu is like the original books given out in the old days. I prefer the books but this is I'm sure cheaper for Autodesk. Any way good luck see you here or on the chat.

First off, I miss South Carolina, lived in Goose Crick (creek) for a year while doing my time.  As mbsteve said, STEEP curve, BUT since you probably don't have any CAD experience, it will be a cake walk compared to if you had CAD on the mind.

Finally, I bow down to you coreed, the book thing is awesome, and I suppose hopefully it will help you to not have to tell a bunch of people to "Read the HELP File!"

LOL

well this the best way to think of it, going into it from cad -- you're not drawing a building.  You're BUILDING a building.  Once you've built it, you can slice it up into any variety of 2D views people are used to seeing and expect in construction documents... but don't let those views constrain how you build your model.

They're the ultimate final product still, sadly, but if you build your building accurately and cleanly, all of the 2D views are only going to benefit.

I'm really not--there are some guys on here who are truly geniuses with a ton of experience, but I just keep my mouth shut a lot of the time on subjects I don't fully understand, so it might look like I'm one, haha.  What's the Mark Twain quote... "better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're a fool than open it and remove all doubt."   I keep that in mind and I help where I know I can.

Tsmyalterego, it sure is a different way of thinking.  Would you believe we spent an hour yesterday just trying to figure out how the move command works?  I miss the command line. Is there some way to cut it one.?

Coreed, Thank you so much. The help section on this software just ain’t getting it.

just,

Please don't give up on the HELP because it is actually very good, you just have to learn how to use it.  I find that using the search is the best way but you need to use simple, one word searches.  And sometimes, you need to use different words than what you may be accustomed to using.

Revit doesn't have a command line, closest thing to it is the status bar in the lower left corner, you should keep an eye on what it says though, much like you would the command line in CAD.

@wwhub ->  It would be a more agreeable world if everyone had the time to sit down and read the help files.  I started back in 9.1, I did exactly that, printed the whole darned help file, then sat down over about a month and digested it bit by bit (spent about 3 hours a day after work every day to do this).  So I laugh every time wwhub says "Read the Help Files!", because he is correct, that should be your first place to go, you'll get better more definitive answers, plus they will be correct.  Lot of people will post something which answers your question, but it might not be exactly what you wanted...  I think you should from now on, instead of saying read the help file, you should inform user to press F1 and then help them with the keyword(s) to use to find said topic.
