The project folder I'm working in is cluttered with the backup files and it's hard to locate what files I'm actually working on. Is there a way to add a folder called "backups" or something and have all the .000# backup files save there instead of my main folder?

How many backups are you saving? You know you can set the maximum number in the revit R - options area?
You can always move some of these to another folder when you want.

Our office standard is to save 3 backups. But when I have 5 or 6 revit files in oen folder, that adds up to be a lot of backups.

To your original question, NO, Unless there is something in the Revit.ini file which allows modification of this, there isn't anywhere that you can control where the backups go. If you have a central file, it creates a directory with its name, and puts backups in there, otherwise every file stores its backups in the same exact directory as where the file resides. I recommend for families saving only 1 (the minimum) backup, for non central files perhaps 3, and then its up to you as to how many you prefer to keep for your central files.

I am not sure with your condition that is in fact what you want to say but if your mean is that saving back up files in different folder then yes it is possible specially when if you are using building construction software then you can have all the faciliteis of maintaing the records.

I am being told that there is a way to send back up files to a specific folder in revit 2013. I have looked in revit options and do not see how this is possible....please help.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think your looking for where your local files go... If you open up the options button from the App button drop down, then go to File Locations Tab. Change the "Default path for user files" to where you want your local files. Please note however, that your backup is always in the same folder as the file. If it is a .rfa (family file) then it will be of the same name with a .###.rfa appended to the name of your family. The same thing happens for a NON Central Project File. A central File however creates a folder with the same name as the project and "_backup" tacked onto the end of the folder name.

Thank you for the quick response....here's our situation: We have a folder titled "archives" that we place our backup files in after we save the main file, the ones with .001,.002,.003...all the backups. We have to constantly manually move them into the archives folder. I'm trying to find a way to set up our projects to where when we save the project the backup files automatically go into the archives folder, this way it keeps our files neat and organized.

I've tried to figure out how to say this, but I don't think there is any need to copy your local files. This is redundant. The central file is an exact copy of your local file at the moment you sync. By copying local files, you are just stuffing more data onto your server, and quite possibly wasting a little bit of time and money too.
If your concerned for being able to return to any moment in a project's life, then in the save-as dialog increase the number of backup files kept.
(NOTE: If your on revit server, then you cannot increase the number of backups kept).
Sso in summary, discuss with whoever implemented this policy whether it is really worth it. I'm on about 5+ years or so in Revit... close to 10 projects under my belt, and the central file itself has ALWAYS been enough...

Thank you for your time, I'm not a very tech saavy individual, with that said sometimes it's difficult for me to understand the verbage of someone trying to explain to me a revit process. I know the message that i'm trying to convey but obvioulsy there's a language barrier here. I'll figure something out. My apologies if i sounded like a dumdass.

There is an add-on you can download and install that will move all the backup files into a backup folder

As a tangent to this topic: If you create a copy of the backup files for a project, does Revit think you have copied the central model to a new location? The reason I asked is because I'm trying to retrace some steps in a project that contains some errors and I've been systematically rollingback to see where the error occurs (In this case a handful of objects that have become invalid at one point in time). What I'm seeing now is that I receive an "Incorrect schema" error, and the inability to create new local files. Any insight on this?

Don't rollback your central unless you mean it!
Instead, copy the central and the central backup to a new folder and roll that one back. Now you won't mess up your central.
BTW - I periodically like to Create a new central where I audit and review errors and ask everyone to create new locals from that new central. The old central with central backup folder goes into a backup folder. I delete that at the end of the project.
