You are correct

it takes a bit of trial and error of lining them up and you should be able to join together.

 

lots of time, when you model something, think of how it will be done in reality and apply the same concept to it.

Overnight I came up with a bit of a solution to this problem.

To get the moulding to sit in the proper locations, I created an extrusion within the arched extrusion. By picking the new 3D lines as my sweeps, I was able to place the moulding profiles more accurately. I still don't have the time to attempt to fiddle by trial & error and join (cut geometry) all the little corners, but the solution worked for now. (As we're just trying to give the homeowner the idea of what it could look like.)

Also, I placed the sweeps while doing the in-place extrusion... so all I have to do to adjust their location on the arch is to move the little blue arrows.....  

So, if anyone else has to try this, maybe this can help. I've attached a snapshot.
