@ moderator

Your solutions are good BUT if i move the view to a sheet, then i can't get rid of the huge "viewport". That's the biggest reason to have a crop view for me in drafting view + it's far more easy than a region !

5 small details and 5 huge viewport aren't easy working

( sorry for bad englisch -don't talk a lot of englisch )

The cropped "viewport" will not be that large but , yes, sometimes the CAD import will cause the view to overlap other views on the sheet.  This will not cause any printing problems.

VIEW SELECTION WHEN VIEWS OVERLAP>  When views overlap, some users have problems selection views on the sheet.  The secret is to just hover over the view you want and hit the tab key until you see the correct view & view title highlight.  Then hit your mouse key to select it.

I don't wanna be a *#*** but when hitting on the tab-key ( in sheets ) you can only see the type of viewport and not the name of drafting view in the left low corner.

And they are all the same for me.

"... until you see the correct view & view title highlight"   The view title on the sheet.

I also think a crop region would be helpful in drafting views also.  I know that you shouldn't technically need them but for those untypical times it would be useful to have so you don't need to go through all of the extra steps

Tea... Create a model view - turn off the model elements and copy/paste in your drafted elements all at the same time - the view will then have a crop region.\

When I worked in CAD, I had a lisp routine that would automatically crop a window around CAD elements.

I really don't understand why people have troubles with this.  I am sure this problem is from imported CAD.  Having a large CAD view beyond your need elements is a Revit killer!  If you don't need this stuff then don't import it!  Learn how to wblock out of CAD and learn how to crop the CAD view first if needed.

And if you are talking about Revit elements then I am completely confused!  Don't draw what you don't want!

I have a lisp routine that I used to use in CAD called cutwin that would cut a hole in the drawing wich you could then wblock out.  The file date when I wrote that was 1/15/91.  I don't know if that still works but there should be something else out there.

Just adding my two "sense." (1) Thank you for this incrediblly helpful post! I am finding that the masking region works best for me, and as long as you keep it clean, your masking region will NOT be that large. And should NOT take up that much more space. (2) As usual WWHub is clear and correct. Thank You WWHub!

That being said...this may be frowned upon BUT...is there a way to make a "Call-Out" link to a drafting view?

The only work-around I can think of is perhaps hiding ALL of the model elements and then drafting in that space. Although, that to me seems undesirable and...a bit of a stretch though...

Keep on Revit-Ing!

You can always reference other view and pick a drafting view.

I have a dummy project file i import any old cad detail i need and srip out what i dont need and then import that view into my Real project in a drafting view.  This does 2 things: 1) i do not have the issue with over size crop boundries and 2) all that crap that comes through with an import does not follow into my project.

The problem with using masking region to hide lines you dont want to show in draftingg view is that on the sheet these drawings will get in the way of each other.

I think this would be a legimate thing on a wishlist in revit.

The issue we have with drafting views is with one line diagrams for sound, video, IT, and control systems.

Revit doesn't have nearly the tools for generating one line digrams that AutoCAD does, so we link the files in. The issue is that several one lines are commonly created in one AutoCAD file (easier for designers & drafters to look at the whole system at once, as many systems interconnect).

Our solution has been to generate a normal one line diagram AutoCAD file with all our one line diagrams, and call it the "master" file. Then we copy each individual one-line diagram into it's own dedicated AutoCAD file using pasteorig so it has the same coordinates. Any design changes must be made to the "master file", then copied into the individual file. The individual files are what we link into AutoCAD drafting views.

When we tried linking the master one line diagrams sheets directly into Revit, we couldn't control how it looked on the sheet very easily.

@WWHub - The close mindedness of your posts is disheartening, given the nature of revit and the ways that individual users apply their situations to the program, there are many situations in which cropping a drafting view would be a useful tool and should be a very easy fix for the folks at Autodesk. You are correct about not needing to crop a view that you drew all of the elements at that time but that is not always the case
