Hi everyone! I'm sure I'm not the only one suffering from Batch Print Rage Syndrome (BPRS). I have searched the forums and found it was a concern, but not really being addressed. Everyone's familiar with AutoCAD's awesome PUBLISH command, right? That was the real deal....time saving, efficient...awesomeness. When we print our sheets in Revit MEP (64bit, super computer), I pick my print set-up, pick CutePDF, pick Select Sheets, check all sheets that apply, then print. I want the thing to print the sheet label of each drawing which displays the Sheet Number, followed by the description above it. I do not want the project number, user name, etc....all useless. I wind up having to go to the destination folder at the end of the whole ordeal and change the names of the files delete all useless stuff. They start off looking like this: PROJECTNUMBER_PROJECTNAME_username_M-101 - LEVEL 01 AREA A1.pdf PROJECTNUMBER_PROJECTNAME_username_M-102 - LEVEL 01 AREA A2.pdf, etc, etc... The files end up looking like: M-101 - LEVEL 01 AREA A1.pdf M-102 - LEVEL 01 AREA A2.pdf, etc, etc... And as equally important, I can't be bothered to be prompted to specify "SAVE AS" for each and every sheet. I want to go away while this is being done to do something else just like in AutoCAD. I have 60 sheets for plumbing, 60 sheets for fire protection, and 60 sheets for HVAC. That's 180 times I have to specify "SAVE AS", and 180 times I have to click "rename" on each and every damned PDF! Please don't take this personally, I am really enjoying Revit but really frustrated (if you can't tell already). Thanks for any responses. Joe

as far i know the CutePDF is just a printer driver for making pdf's and has nothing other than that to do with Revit. if your are on subcription there is batch print tool for Revit from Autodesk that you can download. it may solve your problems. hth

Thanks Coreed, would you happen to have a link to the download? We are on subscription, so I went to the Autodesk website to see if I could log in or something but couldn't find anything as a download or a sign-in page. Cheers, Joe

I seem to remember that the batch printing utility opens up another Revit window and runs seperate from the main window. With Revit's memory problems, we did not implement it.

Koolair, I'm in the same boat as you, I dont know why Revit sends each sheet as a separate print job, We also run into the same issues with our PDF printers, Our printers that track prints to job numbers (we have to enter the job number for each print job), and because it sends them individually other people can accidentally print a sheet in the middle of a set. I looked at the batch printer and as WWHub said its runs a separate instance of Revit, plus it still sends each sheet as a separate job. So it fails to fix the problem. If you find a solution, let me know!

It did for me, Also It would be nice if the batch printer popped the print dialog box so you could choose to batch print to PDF or to a plotter. But it doesn't. The problem stems from the fact it isn't really a "batch printer" its more of a Macro, and with the Sheet sets inside Revit, it really didn't provide any benefits to me.

according to the Revit Help you guys should be able to print all your sheets and views to a single pdf if you want. maybe only certain pdf print drivers have the options you need. i'll check it out and let you know what i find out. To print to PDF - Click Print.
- In the Print dialog, for Name, select your PDF print driver.
If the list does not include a PDF print driver, talk to your system administrator about installing one on your system. See Changing Your System’s PDF Print Settings. - Click Properties.
- On the Properties dialog, define settings for the PDF print driver as desired.
- To print only the sheet or view in the drawing area, do the following:
- Under Print Range, select Current Window to print the entire view or sheet that currently displays in the drawing area, or select Visible Portion of Current Window to print the part of the view or sheet that currently displays in the drawing area.
- Under File, for Name, specify the name and location of the resulting PDF file. If needed, click Browse and navigate to the target folder.
- To print multiple views and sheets, do the following:
- Under Print Range, select Selected Views/Sheets.
- Click Select.
- In the View/Sheet Set dialog, select the views and sheets to print to PDF, and click OK.
- Under File, to generate a single PDF file that contains all of the selected views and sheets, select Combine Multiple Selected Views/Sheets into a Single File. To generate one PDF file for each selected view and sheet, select Create Separate Files.
- For Name, specify the name and location of the resulting PDF file. If needed, click Browse and navigate to the target folder.
If you are generating multiple PDF files, the specified file name is used as a prefix. It is appended with the names of the selected views and sheets.
- If you are printing multiple pages and you want them to print in reverse order, under Options, select Reverse Print Order.
- To change print settings, under Settings, click Setup.
See Print Setup. - When you are ready to print, click OK.
- Some PDF print drivers may display another dialog requesting a location and name for the PDF file. Provide the information requested and click OK.

This setting only removes the prompt and accepts the default naming convention, and always puts it in a fixed location. (in this case they say My Documents). My problem, and I'm sure many / if not most people want PDF's to be filed in with the project folder and probably have some organization under that, To have to setup the system's PDF print settings every time you change projects would be a pain, not to mention the over-writting / automatic renaming fiasco that would ensue the second time you went to print. I guess you could use this option if you had a folder that you always dumped individual sheets into, then just load them into your PDF program and combine them into a single PDF / copy & rename out to your final project location.

" according to the help you should'nt have to do this. you should be able to combine them at the time of printing. i would like to know if that is possible and is it just a matter of the proper pdf print driver.

Okay I found a solution / a trick.. (May and probably wont work for all PDF printers)First with the latest version of Ghostscript / CutePDF in the Print Dialog box you get the "File" option that lets you choose combine into one PDF or keep as separate files. This wasn't the case with the version I originally had Revit treated it like a real printer ( i mean how often do you check for updates on a PDF printer ). Anyways this should now work out of the box. (Revit 2010) The second tip/trick addresses the second point I brought up with job tracking printers and sending as individual jobs. If you specify that you want 2 sets of the drawings the "collate" check box becomes available. When you collate it sends the entire sheet set as one print job. This only works if you need more than 1 set, but its a start. It didn't however collate on our printer.. I'll assume its our crappy Xerox drivers, but this trick might work for other PDF printers that dont register as a save to file type printer. You could send 2-sets to your PDF printer and then go back and *if ti works* and collates delete the pages from the second copy, if it doesn't collate then you can try and delete "all even pages" or something like that.

Yes the help is correct if you use the right print driver (Adobe PDF and CutePDF are the ones I've tested), but it may not for all PDF print drivers, If Revit doesn't recognize it as a print to file type driver then it doesn't work. Also for real printers that track the number of prints to job numbers still have issues if you are not sending multiple sets.

Guys thanks for responding to this. At the moment, this is the biggest source of stress when we are about to issue for something. The problem with the one gigantic pdf is that the trades want to download only the dwgs that pertain to them on each set. I suppose that for the purpose of issuing an entire set for physical printing at a print shop somewhere this "all in one pdf file" approach will work. Yes, I think that's it. Sounds like the ability to allow trades to selectively download will need to wait for 2011. I knew about this feature, but didn't really consider it before. Thanks again.
