the only comment i have is this- no matter what your degree (associate's, BARCH, MARCH, etc...) you will be paid on the low end starting out. your degree is mainly what states your salary cap. your experience can push you higher, faster, but in the end an associate's degree is just an associate's degree. believe me, if i was able to complete just an associates degree and still sit for the arch. record exam and complete idp, that would be a lot cheaper route than B.ARCH + M.ARCH put together.... if you push yourself, not only will you be able to grow as a person, but eventually you will be rewarded in your career as well. i do agree, that you can only eat enough ramen soup and pinch the $$$ so far....good luck!

I really believe in hanging in there when it come to pay and showing the bosses you are working hard. I did all I could to learn Revit well (only one in the office using it) and it paid off for me. Got a very good raise this year and just got the biggest christmas bonus ever!

You're getting ripped off dude. Even our CAD drafters fresh out of school get more than $10.00 an hour at my firm. Is your AA in architecture or just Acad? How long have you been doing architectural work? I don't know what the going rates are in Cinci but here in southern California you could start at $20.00 to $25.00 an hour and more depending your experiance level. You might want to think about looking into relocating to a bigger city or just look around your area for a firm that will pay top dollar. The bigger architectural firms here already have REVIT teams but the mid-sized ones are just getting on board and I'm sure they would jump at anyone with a year and a half experiance in REVIT. You also might might want to think about mechanical design. I am a plumbing designer and work for a firm with 35 people and make 3 times what you are there. That isn't even how much I could/will be making. Plumbing designers are in big demand because there are not that many good ones out there. I have been doing Acad for 15 years and plumbing design for 10 years and I started as a drafter with just an AA degree like you. I don't say that to be mean or show off, just to show you what you could be making. Our firm is just getting started with REVIT but we are one of the bigger firms. A smaller firm who wants to get on board with REVIT will pay much more than what you are making with your experiance. Just something to think about, good luck.

The only comment I have for you is to remember that if you do some freelance work for other firms, they will expect to pay more. When you are employed full-time by someone, you cost about 2.5 times your salary (company cost for health care, social security taxes, and your share of overhead) So, you should not go out to do freelance and think that you should charge $15/hour. Expect to charge $25 - $35/hr for cad and up to $50 to $75/hour for 3D work. The other suggestion I have is that knowledge of software for an architect/draftsmen is like a secretary knowing how to type. It is just a tool. Try to learn as much about proper construction detailing, building systems and materials, and how to properly create a good set of construction documents and specifications. Too many people get fixated on knowing how to use a program, but not how to convey useful information.

I am an licensed architect in Brasil with masters in lighting design and moved to USA 4 years ago. I thought myself Revit and I would consider my skills really advanced. I just left the company I was working for 3 years to open my own business. I still looking for a part time job. Could you tell me what would be the fair amount to charge by hour if I work for myself and if I am to apply to a job? Thanks

Hi Im from Aussie & work for a large practice. We pay our first year drafters with no usable Revit experience (only college) $37,598.74 USD (plus super) for a 38 hour week $20.3500 USD per hour senior draftpersons with lenghty building experience & 2-3 years Revit experience can expect $55,000 USD (plus supper) $30.50 USD to $65,000 USD (plus supper) $36.00 USD
