Hi everyone, I'm new here (shy smile).  I've learned a lot from all you boffins out there but I have yet to learn this one thing (and then many more I'm sure):  Can revit (either 9 or 2010) cut the geometry of a site to display base line?  The attached image shows where the stone wall.

Thanks!

Seeker

PS: is there a way to do a combined word search on this forum?  '+' & 'AND' don't seem to help as I am still getting 109 (!) pages when I try and narrow down my keyword search to include all words (in stead of any words).

Ok, perhaps it would help if I complete my sentences...

The attached image shows where the stone wall... meets the topography.  But there is no line there!

Can Revit handle this??

Thanks!

Learn to use the join geometry tool.  You can read about it in your HELP.

Thanks for trying dude, but it doesn't look like you can join walls to a site.

Anybody else?  Surely we're not the only ones with this issue.  Or is this just a major oversight by Autodesk?

If you turn on shading with edges you will see where the topography meets the wall, but it won't show with hidden line.  If you need the line, trace over it with Shading turned on and then switch back to hidden line mode.

Yeah, you can't use the "join Geometry" (even in 2010) to join walls with topo site, i think WWhub was thinking in another issue when he reply your tread, but do like Tim said, in the elevation view where you need that line, create one....

Actually, I was looking at his roof where his chimney and roof don't meet as well.  Once he learned to use this tool he would discover on his own where it works and where it doesn't work.

WWHub, it is because 'he learned to use this (the join geometry) tool' that he discovered (all on his own) that it doesn't work - hence the post on the forum.  I find it helps a lot to read the post - or the subject line, or the file title - before replying.

Thanks for the other replies.  Tim123's solution seems to be the best workaround - we'll try that.  I am very surprised that a workaround like this is required even at the current level of the software.  Hopefully they'll fix this in a future release.

I'm not sure if this is the answer or not, but what if he used a building pad for his footprint and try joining his walls to THAT and then show his building pad to be above the grade line?  For the projet I'm working on it seems to work.  For that matter, I have used my building pad as my initial floor because I was able to create an 8" pad that also showed the 8" stone underlayment as well.  Works nice for my wall sections.

That won't work for him because pads don't follow the natural topography, which is typically undulate, and since you can't topography to pads either, this won't work.  Unless I'm missing something in your method (?).

BTW, did you already create the PAD in the interior of the building? if so, did you sketch the lines by the exterior of the walls???

I'm sorry that I did not give you the correct answer initially but the view you posted suggested that you had not even tried the join geometry. I gave my post because that would be a logical first try even though it doesn't work and I would hope you are trying to discover things on your own.

I think you should listen to advice rather than just saying a person that tried to answer you is wrong.  Mars gave you your answer indirectly but you didn't try that - see attached.

WWHub, your method of giving wrong advice knowingly in an effort to try and teach (no doubt) lazy folk like me who (no doubt) did not search the help files is, well, strange.  You probably just didn't read the post (or the subject line, or the title of the image).  However, you can rest assured, I am 'trying things on my own' before bothering you guys!

MARS,

As per my reply post, am I missing something in how you're doing this?  WWHub recons you gave an answer 'indirectly' and though he seem to have clinched it, he's not telling.  How would pads cut the geometry?  Pads are not joinable geometry either so I'm wondering how this works for you guys?

Hi Typhoon,

The pads have been created inside the walls.  However, we make tehse only 10mm thin and place a slab on top.  The pads were in fact drawn to the exterior of the walls - however I do not see how this would help.

Any further assistance would be much appreciated.

Seeker

I have always used pads and not had an issue so I did not immediately recognize that you had not.  I did not purposly give you a wrong answer.  I simply said that you needed to use the join geometry tool because I noticed that your roof and chimney were not joined.  Sorry that you took offense with that.

Mars said to use a pad and to join geometry of the walls.  The pad is the answer - the join geometry of the walls does nothing for you.  Typhhon too told you to sketch along the outside of the walls for your pad.  If you create the pad to the outside of the wall - that is what cuts the site and what you see in the images I included.... THE SITE EDGE where the pad has cut it.

Seeker, don't argue with WWhub, he can be your best friend here, also you said and i quote: "Pads are not joinable geometry either so I'm wondering how this works for you guys?" - yeah BUT if you create a section view cutting that wall and the pad, and if you pick in that wall you gonna see in top and bottom the "Blue Arrows" of the wall, so if you pick in the blue arrow in bottom and drag to touch in the top of the pad you gonna see a "open blue pad lock" click on that and the pad lock is now closed, in this way you "Attach" the wall to the pad, you move or drag the pad to up or down and you gonna see the wall attached to pad....
