1.  How can you mirror the elements but without copy them at the same time?

2.  How do you select previous selections in hotkeys?

3.  I downloaded the mech equipment ducts from the downloads section (very convenient).  I loaded it to my current project and it worked out perfectly.  How can I make this new families to be applied to every project (globally)?

4.  Is there a way you can use "tape measure" in the 3d view?

5.  Is there a hotkey to go to each level (floor plan) instead of double-click the level name?

6.  Is there a way you can click on the corner of element, and it will instantly tell you where that point is (x,y,z axis)??

7.  How can I change the display color of the downloaded family (duct)?  I tried the "element properties" and found no option you can choose the display color (see the attached PDF file.)

  1. When you type your mirror command, untick copy in the options bar
  2. Click "Edit" in the menu bar and you should see the command for select previous. Do you want to repeat previous commands though?
  3. Create a template (file-->new-->project-->create new template or edit the one you already use) and load the family into the template.
  4. No.
  5. No.
  6. Sort of. You can aquire its "shared co-ordinates". These refer to its N/S and E/W value relative to the project origin.
  7. Many things could be contributing to this. Check the view detail (in "view control bar"Winking, check phasing, check model graphics style("VCB"Winking, check materials to make sure it doesn't have a solid fill cut pattern. It looks like you have "Shading with Edges" selected, change that to "Hidden Line" and the colour should go away.

Thanks for the info.

6.  What's the meaning of "share co-ordinates"?

Another question:

Is there such a point (0,0,0) in Revit "like the one in AutoCAD"?

Would you mind to elaborate more for the response in question 3?

How do I load the family into the project so it becomes part of the default template and can be applied to every brand new project?  Thanks.

disellam ... plese learn to use your help .... shared coordinates is explained there as well as templates.  If you don't understand that, then ask more specific questions

Sorry for my numerous questions.  Sometimes the help section is not as intuitive as I would have hoped.  Please forgive my naive questions.

Please see the attached zip file for the revit model.

Both the elbows and the ducts seem to share the same properties, but the ducts are rendered in RED color, but the elbows are rendered in greyish color.  Why?  Both of the view properties and element properties are the same.

Thanks once again.

If the families are built using different materials then they will render according to the material settings in the project.

2.  Do you know where your KeyboardShortcuts.txt file is located and how to edit it?

I recommend printing this out, and making changes to it along the way.  Don't print out a new one everytime, unless you enjoy murdering our beautiful planet...wait, wrong forum.  You'll make more and more changes to it as you learn different aspects of the program, so one marked-up copy will do.

3.  It's just like a regular file- it just has a different extension.  It's also just like an AutoCAD template- except it's a Revit file.

It sounds like you're pretty green- so I'll give you this sage advice.  Get your template in order!  Load what you use the most and get your graphics to look how you want them.  You can fine-tune it on the go, or you can review each project you've completed and determine what you want to change.  I usually make notes during the project, and update the template afterwards.

You'll also want to purge un-needed items.  Keep your template file size as small as you can.

6.  A coordinate system in Revit exists, but it's behind-the-scenes.  What are you using coordinates for?  You really shouldn't need them 99% of the time.

 7.  Each element has a material applied to it- usually throught the family itself.  What you'll need to do is edit the family, and through the Materials dialogue assign/adjust the material/color as needed.  Go to 'Settings-->Materials' to access this dialogue.  Changes made here affect the only the current project.

Thanks for the response.  I got the hotkeys thing figured but still not the template.  I will try to dig deeper today.

What I meant by the coordinates is that when I click on a point of an element, let's say it's the corner of the bottom of the concrete beam.  In FormZ, it will tell me exactly where that point is in (x,y,z axis).  The good thing about this feature is that I instantly know where the bottom of the concrete beam is without measuring and stuff like that.  I was wondering if Revit has this feature.

Some other questions I have:

1.  My Mechanical engineer was telling me yesterday they created the ducts layout in 3d model, but in a 3rd party software, not in Revit.  My question is if I want to import his stuff into Revit, if they just save it as a .dwg file, would that be good enough?  Also, once I import it, do I import it as the massing elements?  I just want to know what's the typical way when dealing with 3rd party software into Revit.

2.  Is there a point (0, 0, 0) in Revit?  Like in the future, when I try to link the 3d model from each MEP, structural engineer, like in AutoCAD, it should be XREF with the same reference point (in my case, it's 0,0,0).  Where's the 0,0,0 point in Revit?

Thanks in advance.

We just finished a project where we linked in 3dCad ducts.  You have a few options.

If you can have the ductwork seperated by floor - in seperate files, that is best.

There is no real 0,0,0 point in REVIT.  If you have given them a base CAD model from your file, then a straight link should work if they have not moved it.  Otherwise, I would like their CAD drawing and move it to a common point in your model.  Then update the file as the job progresses - no need to re-insert it.

Thanks for the response.

So you are saying to link the 3d CAD duct to my revit model as a dwg file?

This is the part I'm still considering.  I'm going to be the independent guy to compile all of the information from architect, MEP, structural engineers into a global, central file so that the client can see the whole thing at once.  So who should be the one to dictate where that reference point is?  Is it from the architect since they are the one to draw the floor plans and I just use this point?

If I intend to make the global, central file to be live and instantly updated, as long as the architect's file is also modeled in Revit, that wouldn't be a problem.  But what about if the consultants' file that's created in a 3rd party software, I guess they need to convert it to a dwg file in order to link it to the central file.  But then it won't be live because it's not Revit.  So whenever the consultant update their file in a 3rd party software, they just need to convert it to a dwg file.  So is it the typical workflow to deal with files that are not created in Revit but still maintaining the central file live and up to date?

Thanks in advance.

  1. "...who should be the one to dictate where that reference point is?"  The architect should set up the file and if done in REVIT, it may be by real world coordinates.
  2. "....what about if the consultants' file that's created in a 3rd party software..."?  yes - have them make 3d CAD files for you to link in.
  3. Live and up-to-date ... if files are linked then just replace them - same name - and when REVIT is opened, it will read the latest file.

Cool.  Thanks a lot once again.  I'm sure I'll have more questions down the road.  I'll save them till next week.

UPDATE .... I misled you a little.

I had previously imported the 3D cad into a family which I imported.  That is not how we did our latest project.  Instead:

  1. Have the cad exported to an IFC file
  2. In REVIT click on Import IFC - this will create a new REVIT file where the import will be done and you will consider this as your Mech or ?
  3. Link that new file into REVIT.

I don't quite understand.  You mean to export as an .IFC file instead of .dwg file? (Within the 3rd party software or in AutoCAD?)

This guy saved it as .dwg file and I was able to import it to my Revit file without a problem.

The problem is then when I tried to make a section cut out of it, nothing is being cut, why?  Is it because it's not a Revit based object?
