Anyone really dissapointed in the exterior renderings in revit 2009? The interiors come out spectacular with natural and artificial lighting, but the exterior renderings using just sun come out terrible. you can only control the reflectance of the glass and not the transparency which is a huge disappointment.

 The glass is so transparent that it appears almost black when rendered due to the shadows inside the building. Even if you use the blue-green or blue glass it still appears exactly the same, you don't see the color, you only see darkness from within.

 Has anyone had any success rendering a nice green glass? Ive tried making custom materials that appear green but even with transparency all the way up at 100%, it appears almost completely opaque and the interior columns are no longer visible thru the glass.

 Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Ive attached a couple images of examples. In the 'revit glass' JPG the color of the glass where the shadows are is completly dark and no blue-green is visible whatsoever. In the 'custom glass' the entire curtain wall appears almost totally opaque green even though the transparency is set to 100%.

Ummm, my Revit 09 has transparenccy, translucency, refectivity and more.

Sounds like you should dive a little deeper into the Mental Ray materials.

So I click on glass from my material list, choose the 'render appearance' tab, select replace, choose the blue-green glass and click ok. Under glazing properties the only things that appear are 1) color transmittance 2) reflectance 3) index of refraction 4) roughness and 5) bump pattern. Thats it, theres nothing else to adjust.

 If I choose glazing from the material library I can adjust 1) color transmittance 2) reflectance and 3) sheets of glass.

What type of glass are you selecting to get those options to appear? They only appear if I choose 'generic' and make a material from scratch. They also seem to appear when I choose glass block, but I don't want a block pattern, I just want smooth glazing.

Any ideas?

my advise would be to create a dummy project and add a bunch of glass walls, assign each a different style of Mental Ray glass and mess with the settings to see which is going to perform to your standards. I have taking things like luminous glass and removed the self illumination to create a color quality I liked. I use Max alot tho, so I don't fudge my materials much in Revit.

those images are kind of close to what Im looking for, but the glass is too transparent. I want it to read more green and smooth rather than clear. I can increase the reflectance to make it less transparent, but then I lose the color transmittance which doesn't appear very well to begin with.

 I have tried that method of setting up dummy walls. I have one dummy project with 5 panes of glass side by side and 5 glass materials. I set each one to a different mental ray material with different settings and render and I still haven't found anything close to the quality I am looking for. It is so surprising because of how much of an improvement the rendering engine is compared to accurender, the interiors looks amazing but making a nice glass render from the exterior is near impossible. I haven't been able to get one that makes my boss happy yet, he doesnt even want to see the renderings because of the glass, he says its a waste of time for him to look at something so terrible....

So, change the material glass (rippled), custom the color to MORE Green....

if its rippled it will no longer be smooth. If only I could change transparency all of this would work fine....

I have managed to get this rendering using the green glazing and reducing the number of sheets to 1. Its starting to look like I want, I just wish I could reduce the transparency.

Try co increase the "Reflectance %"....

i dont see any transparency settings either....and how would you do spandrel glass?

this is very frustrating...im very disappointed as well....

beacuse the material settings are very limited and confusing.

in '09 some materials have certain options, others dont. glass for example doesnt have a transparency setting. i have not yet been able to create a decent looking spandrel glass. i have been playing around with paint or a canvas to create spandrel glass...that's ridiculous. it just doesnt look good.
