I know that this is a really old thread, but I came across this today with the same problem and my solution was that my view that I was looking at my project with was inside of a wall. So, when I would render, it would only see the inside of a CMU wall which was all black. I just "walked" my view a little forward and got a wonderful rendering. Just in case that somebody stumbles on this thread like I did.
