I work in a Historic preservation firm and we are using REVIT and I am wondering if anyone knows if there is any kind of laser scanning technology that can be used with REVIT.  Right now, we spend lots of time measuring a building and then we create the model in REVIT, but we were thinking that if there is some kind of laser scanning that can be used, we could cut our time down a lot and the scan would probably end up being more accurate than our hand measurements.  I know that laser scanning can be put into cad formats right now, and at least that is something.

So, does anybody have any information on this?

Thanks

I'm going to keep an eye on this thread because I think automated 3D importation of existing conditions would be extremely helpful.

I have only had experience with one laser-scanning company and they wouldn't even provide 3D information as a deliverable for any price. They provided plans, elevations and sections as 2D AutoCAD drawings on a per-view basis. Their scanning process generates a point-cloud. Theoretically, whatever format that is in should be importable to a 3D-modelling program (like Blender, 3DS, Viz, Maya, etc) and then out to something Revit-compatible like a *.sat file.

I know it would just be a dumb object in Revit, but it could be used as a template if you need existing objects with intelligence or used as-is if it's not necessary. I've seen a 3D scan in which you can tell where the wallpaper is peeling up...can't wait until I have to figure out how to model peeling wallpaper in Revit. hehe.

Bauhaus1919, those point-clouds can be imported in Autocad directly, which then could be imported in Revit i would guess.

Our suppliers will do it for you or rent you the laser machine to do the job for your self.
