i've seen it being asked elsewhere on this forum a question about creating a reveal in a conc wall for example and would need some clarification after creating the profile in a rfa file and coming back into revit to draw a wall and editting its structure, when the preview window is set to plan the reveal button is grayed out so how does one create a reveal running the height of the wall and btw should the reveal profile be an open or closed shape

Profiles should always be a closed shape. You can only embed horizontal sweeps and reveals in a wall. To place vertical reveals you will need to use the hosted sweep tool, wall reveal, then switch to vertical... The reveal is greyed out cause the preview is in plan, change the preview to section to get access to these buttons. If the building is rather large and there is to be lots of vertical reveals i would consider using the curtain wall tool to do this, providing you are using v7. HTH.

I probably wouldn't attempt it using the curtain wall tool in v6. Goto an elevation of the wall and make sure you have your reveal profile loaded: In the modelling tab at the left of the screen, select host sweep, wall reveal. Go to the properties of the reveal, edit/new and change the profile from default to the loaded profile. Then select vertical and place the profile. After placing each one you will need to hit the start next button. HTH.

Maybe you can try split the wall first before your host sweep>reveal & place the reveal in the wall that you intended

Would any of these techniques work to produce a standard spacing of vertical reveals? For example, to add "vertical board & batten siding" at 16" on center (assuming that i don't want to use a surface pattern, because I want the shadow lines of the raised battens to show)

What I do for vertical battens is place a curtain wall in front of my main exterior wall. Define a fixed spacing of 16", add mullions to only the vertical grids of the proper size and material, change the curtain panels to blank, and align and lock the curtain wall to the exterior wall. See attached image. Tom

Nice technique, tomdinmn... thanks! Now, I just need to try it on a battered wall. I wonder if you can get the battens to follow a vertical slope...
