This one has been buggin me for a while.... You do a model hatch, say a 600x300 floor tile pattern and it randomly changes orientation depending on the size of the boundaries. You CAN rotate the pattern: You can rotate any surface pattern by "pre-highlighing" a line within the pattern, select rotate from the toolbar and then type in the desired angle in the options bar. THIS ONLY WORKS ON MODEL FILL PATTERNS. =)

You can also use the "align" comand to rotate the pattern to match the angle of the host. I found this useful when i was making an 18"x18" floor pattern and needed to rotate the pattern by 32.45....some odd degree that resulted in rotating the plan.

What's "Pre-highlighting"? And how do I do that with Revit 9.1?

Hover over the line with your mouse and if it dosn't hilight, use your tab key until it dose become hilighted.

Ok so, I am trying to do this. I have a stone column with a model hatch of 'Carolina Ledgestone'. When I try to 'PreHighlight' it. It just highlights the mass. It cannot seem to distinguish the lines inside the hatch. Therefore I cannot rotate it. If I try to aligh the hatch, it doesn't give me an option to rotate it and the align just causes the mass to align to objects around it. Again it cannot distinguish the lines in the hatch. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

I'm not sure, but it might be because you are using a unique hatch pattern. I have typicaly had sucess when using cross hatch or brick patterns. I havn't messed with stone and complex hatched patterns yet.

I'm also having an issue rotating a hatch pattern. In this case, the shingles are all drawn the same way on a roof sloping in 4 directions. Any idea how I can at least rotate the hatch pattern on the 2 side faces? (Also, if anyone can help me on what my view range should be to see the entry canopies below my roof but not the walls, etc, that would help a great deal). Thanks!

Velvet, In order to rotate your roof shingles you'll need to hover over them in plan and highlight just one shingle line by tabbing through the elements. Once highlighted click it, and activate the rotate command (RO). Press your start point for the rotate, then type in 90. That should do it. If in plan doesn't work, try in 3d view. Also your view range can be set to your canopies and if walls show up you can hide them individually per that view, or just hide alll walls in your roof plan. But I like to turn on wireframe then use a thick dashed line with the lineweight tool and outline all the walls below my roof line. Then turn it back to Hidden Line view and it will show all my dashed lines through the roof. It is easy to do and show the outline of the walls below and will move with the walls since technially the linework is part of the element. HTH, Lorne

PS-Don't forget your shingles pattern needs to be a model pattern not a draft in order for this to work.

Hi lorne, Yeah, I'm not sure why my roof is appearing in draft mode. I don't even know what that is. All my other floor plans, etc, are normal, so I'm not sure what is making my roof plan all screwy. How would I change out of drafft view? (Also, not sure if this matters, but the shingles in 3D view are all diagonal. In elevation, they read correctly and are fine.)

It sounds like your hatch pattern is a draft pattern. Not necessarily your view. Your view is a model view. First from your screen shot, see if you're in wireframe or hidden line. Hiddenline should take away your walls showing through unless you have your walls not attached to the roofs or if your roof category is set to transparent under visibility graphics. Second, go to your shingles material in the materials window. Then look at the hatch pattern you'll get two different menus in there, one is draft and one is model. If your shingle pattern is under drafts then it's a draft pattern and is more difficult to deal with in 3d model views. What you need to do is find that hatch pattern in model. There may or may not be one already loaded in that will suffice. Let me know if that lost you. I can send screenshots if necessary. Lorne

Hi lorne, Yeah, I'm lost..... I don't see a draft menu in the materials view. I also attached my view range values. I tihnk that's why my walls are showing? But I can't' think of another way to show the canopies that are 2 stories below the roof. I'm not a newbie to Revit, but I sure feel like one at the moment (Thanks for helping me with this!)

Velvet, First looks like your view range is fine. It shouldn't show the walls like that. Usually on my roof plans, I set my roof plane level way above the roof. That way I never actually cut through the roof in my range. However I don't think this is the issue with you. I think maybe go to visibility graphics and scroll down to roof and look at the far right, you'll see two boxes (halftone, transparent). Make sure both of those are not checked, looks like they are. The other idea; are your walls going up through your roof? Are they higher than your actual roof? Second, in your materials dialog, click the '...' button next to surface pattern. Now you should see the draft and model patterns. Let me know what you find. Lorne

Hi lorne.... problems solved! I found what you were talking about with the draft view hatch pattern. There's no shingles listed under model, but I found one under draft, so that's what I was using. I had no idea there was a difference. Thanks! The look of halftone was me just being completely dense I switched to the rafter bearing view, and everything works out fine.... my roof plan level was hovering above my building, so the roof I was seeing was just an underlayment.... heh....oops! Thank you sooo much for walking me through all that! Ali
