sure seems funny that no matter what job listings you look at anywhere on any web site all

you see is a huge number of "CAD" drafting jobs but ZERO revit jobs.. for the past year it's

been the same one or two jobs where they wanted a revit/autocad administrator or something

like that..  look at jobs on this site and you see nothing also.. does ANYONE know where revit

is actually being used outside of a bunch of people talking about learning it ? i know there

are stories about this firm or that firm or the trade center bla bla bla- but i'm talking about

the REALITY for drafters getting work using revit like they do everyday with autocad..

what could be more relevant to revit then when or if you will actually be able to use it?

There are more Revit jobs listed out on monster.com

Part of the problems is that the HR departments of many firms haven't updated their boiler plate job listing since the early 80's and still refer to needing CADD or CAD operators.

We are always on the lookout for Revit help.  We have 15 office nationwide.  Send me an email if you want.

There is a huge shortage of knowledgeable revit users out there.  If you applied to any company using revit and you have some experience with the product you should have no problem getting a position.  I know of at least 15 firms here in brisbane looking for revit staff...

thanks mr spot that was somewhat encouraging..

it also seems to me there would be a huge demand

for revit users.. and that is what has kept me learning

it for almost two years.. but it's hard for me to stay

100% motivated on "faith" alone.. it's just hard

for me to accept that all these firms needing revit drafters

so bad don't know how to tell anyone.. any job listings

for drafters always have about 20 for autocad and one

for revit if that.. anyway i'm not expecting anyone to answer

to this reality because i'm in on it too- whatever it is..

i would like to get your opinion on this one critical idea

that is the focus of my interest in revit.. from the beginning

of my revit journey i wanted to work at home.. i have learned

a lot about worksets and networks but no one i have ever asked

knew anything about actually working with revit this way except what

the training says about worksets.. can you imagine anything about

working this way ? for example where i would just do roofs for

firms involved with large residential projects like in the

US or canada or australia and never go to the firms' location..

i'm not worried about how to set up a VPN or how worksets

work (i'm learning those things just fine) but just about the prospects

for working this way.. thanks

I work remotely quite frequently using a VPN and terminal services.  Unless you have a superfast WAN your not going to be able to use worksets directly over the net.  A remote workstation seems to be the best compromise.  The only issue is you need a vacant workstation where the server is located to connect to.

The other option on large files is working on linked pieces that are worked on isolated from the rest of the model and linked back together...

Hi Mr Spot, Very tempting on your comment here on the high demand of Revit Architect in Brisbane/Australia. Maybe you can help me here. I am thinking of migrating to Sydney. I graduated from UNSW and have 15 yrs on Architectural. Already have 2 years experience on Revit. I have done all kinds of project on Revit incl Retirement Village & Hotel. I now specialise on highend bungalow, supercondo and marketing presentation. Basically I takeover from conceptulisation to documentaion or presentation on a 1 man show basic. The reason is there is no one else here using Revit in my hometown! You can see my work posted as "Tropical Design".

Anyway, with that kind of skill, what sort of remuneration are we  talking about ?  Thank mate.

What about in US? Thanks.

G'day mate. I am migrating to Sydney, Australia. Looking for Revit Architect position. Any taker? Thanks. Kim Wong.

Well, HR really isn't my field but perhaps between $40-60K AUS.  But don't quote me on that, it would totally depend on the company, conditions and your tested skill level.  You'd be surprised how many people tell me they have 2 or 3 years experience on Revit then when i see them in action they don't know much at all purely because they've only ever had to be involved in a limited part of the program.  IE: Don't even know what worksets, design options, phasing is and family creation is rather basic.

I wouldn't have a clue about the US.

Here in the US, Revit operators can easily get 40-60K US.  Revit/BIM managers go for 60-90K +.

This of course varies by region and by firm.

As for experience, like my Dad used to say "do you have 2 years of experience or 1 month of experience repeated 24 times over ?"

I more or less made my Revit position.  I started with a company that was running AutoCAD 2004 LT.  They asked me if I would like to run Sketchup for planning models.  I shuddered at the mention of 'Sketchup'.  Then I told them about Revit, and how valuable a tool it would be to turn your planning models right into CDs.  They went for it.  We now have 3 license and I have 2 other people that run Revit with me.  My boss was so stoked.  If you would have asked him 2 years ago if he would ever be working in 3D, he would have laughed and answered NO.  If you want a Revit job, all you have to do is let people know that you run Revit.  Make your own job.

P.S. We use terminal service to work from home.

It looks like the grass is greener on the US side!

Here in Malaysia, I doubt they will pay that much as it would be higher then the principal. I prefer to go as a freelance Revit Architect. On a project basic I could charge Rm20K - 30K to do a project from conceptualization to submission. If I am lucky, it can be done in 1-2 weeks or 1-3 months. It depends on how the client react to the visualisation we present to him/she.

So what about freelance service fees like in US/Australia/UK/SA.....? Thanks.

Tom that is interesting.

I can assure you i'm on much more than. That was what i believe an Australia Revit Operator is worth.  A BIM Manager is a different story.

Interestingly though i was offered a BIM Management position in the US by a major architecture firm and was offered much less than that.

Ironically US revit operator annual is even much more than me for the people who work on site and sometime support in revit presentation. haha...(if considering exchange rate, it is 3 to 4 fold)

If given me half of the US annual paid and I can be given a chance to learn together structure and system...properly I might seriously consider them..haha (of course, only if it is in Malaysia or Asia Pacific Region) and I seriously doubt it.

Anyway, there are just things you won't learn from revit...on the REAL site...

Kane Architects in Chicago is working completely in REVIT, and have been for several years. We are a 10 person firm doing mostly healthcare and multi family residential.  We've recently got our hands on some retail work in malls around the US.  I think there are revit jobs out there in general, you just have to look... or create your own as a previous poster mentioned.

I just graduated college in June and found a job here in July, and I wasn't even specifically looking for a revit job.  But boy am I glad to have found it compared to what some of my peers are doing in the field currently.

 Good Luck.
