Is it possible to explode a string of dimensions?  I am finding that if I need to adjust one dimesion in a string I have to delete the whole string and start over.  There has to be an easier way.

Do you mean deleting a witness line?

Modify>select your dimension string>edit witness lines>select the items pick point to delete it>have to click somewhere blank near the original to set the new string
