When I do a small dimension the number is obscured by the leader lines, so I move the number to the side but revit adds a horrid little arc line that connects from the number to the centre of the dimension. Is there a way I can turn this off?

Of Course. Select the dimension string and deselect the leader option in the option bar at top of screen.
