O.K. I've searched this site and checked the Revit help menu but I'm coming up empty handed. It's taken a few of us new users here in the office some time to grasp the whole central and local file concept on a network. And, we're still not entirely comfortable with it yet! Is there a "rule of thumb" for this situation: you've been out of your local file for an extended length of time (say 2 days or more) but other's continue to work on the file so, do you immediately save to central right after opening the file as we're prompted to do or do you delete your local file and make a new local copy from the central file? We are building up some large files here and we want to be careful to not lose or corrupt any data. Thanks in advance.

I try and save to my central file evry 30min to 1 hour, that will depends on the amount of work I'm doing.
this is not hard to click on your "save to central" button every 30 min or so.
by doing it often you are reducing the amount of data going through your network.
always (and I mean ALWAYS) save to central and relinquish everything at the end of the day!
once a week, it would be a good idea to open the central file and save locally again...
hope this shed some lights for you

Yes, we've got the periodic saves throughout the day down to an active reflex mainly due to Florida's notorious thunderstorms and our occasional loss of power. Making a new local copy once a week does seem like a good idea. Thanks!

how do you fix a problem on a central file when a person who didn't save to central file and relinquished because that person is no longer with the company and we have no access to his computer to relinquish becuase IT already deleted the account.

Try opening Revit and going into the settings menu and changing your user name to what theirs was and then do a save as and relinquish. HTH Brett

if you know that your local file is up to date, open a Revit session, go File-->Open... and navigate to your local file, select it and select "detach from central" option (an audit won't hurt) this will detach your file from central and give you all the control, re save this as the central file again (you can override the current one) re create your local files.
