Hello Guys,

First of all, I would like to say hello. I am pretty new using revit, but I found fascinating all the idea of BIM technologies. I am trying to learn as fast as I can, but I have to admit it is overwhelming the amount of information and bim related stuff that is out there for being learnt.

Well, now my question:

As part of the permit processing in the area I am working we are required to note the location of the articulation joints for brick walls. It should be noted in both views (elevations and plan) as it can be seen in the attached picture 01.jpg. The problem is that at that stage, it is very common for any project to be changed because of either council or client's requirement. As a result, very often we find ourselves modifying and relocating the lines and symbols. I came across the idea of creating a family that, having a wall as host, shows symbol for the articulation joint in the plan view and in elevation it shows a dashed line. Pretty easy to do. However, I would like this family to change following the host properties. So it would always show the dashed line along the total height of the wall and scale itself every time the wall height changes 02.jpg. Is that possible to do? Hope I explained myself properly. Thanks in advance.

Oscar

By "articulation joint" do you mean what we call a control joint?  A control joint is a vertical joint that allows for exp/contraction.

You could use a wall based family -void -  that cuts the brick and is taggable.   That would give you a solid line on elevations which is really corrct and it would self adjust to the height of the wall.

It is not possible to the best of my knowledge to have the articulation joint family associate with the wall family's height parameter. The issue is that walls are a system family and you cannot add parameters too them or alter the existing parameters. Unfortunately the best way to do this is to use an instance parameter in the arcticulation joint family to set the height manually to the height of the wall it is hosten on.

Wouldn't using vertical wall sweeps be a viable solution here?

i think the void family is a good way to solve that issue with a symbolic line but in order to achieve a self adjusting family for the height i did the height parameter as an instance parameter with grips and then when putting the void family i lock the family with the top of the wall .

hope this helps,

Gasser.
