So, I've been trying to figure out this family for a while without any luck. I'm creating a concentric vent to show on our walls and for some reason it's showing on top of the wall in plan, even though the elevation is set to 9'-0". The Cut plane in the floor plan is set to 4'-0" and the Top is set at 7'-6". I've attached an image of what it looks like. Also, a side problem. I've set the origin of the family by creating two reference planes that are set to "Defines origin" (see attached pic). Unfortunately, when I go to place the family in an elevation view, it is being placed by the top-most part of the element, in this case, being the top of symbolic line as opposed to the center of the concentric vent.Any thoughts? Thank you in advance!

Not sure I follow completely but here are a couple of things.  Revit has cuttable and non-cuttable families - you can search HELP > Cuttable.  If any portion of a non-cuttable family is in the view (EVEN INVISIBLE LINES) then the entire family shows.

Thanks! That is helpful, although I don't get why there are so many not cuttable categories... Nevertheless, that answers my first question.

Any idea on the second? The family insertion point in the project is not where the two "defines origin" reference planes intersect in the family. Rather, it is at the very top of the family. Any way to fix this?

So much depends on how the family was built.... Are the defines origin planes pinned in the family?

Have you flexed the family, in the family editor, to what your settings are in the project?

The reference planes are pinned. And I can't seem to figure out any settings that are different. I've attached it for anyone that has some time to take a look at it.

Thanks in advance.

I know: the family has objects (including ref planes) that exceeds the level of the next floor. You have to edit the family and drag the end of ref. planes to be as short as possible (in an elevation view) and do the same with any other object or dimension.

So, that's a great point I never thought about. The reason that it's showing in plan is because the Symbolic Line that is supposed to indicate the required clearance actually falls within the View Range. If I get rid of the symbolic line, it disappears in plan, which is good, but also unfortunate because I would like to have the clearance as part of the family... Any workarounds?

Also, changing the reference planes doesn't seem to fix the insertion point, unfortunately, so that is still a bit of a bummer.

Thank you so much for your help so far.

Why have the symbollic line if you don't want to see the element?   Seems like an oxymoron.

See image.  It seems like your issue is due to how Revit works according to discipline.  In an architectural project where the element is below the view cut plane, it is hidden by the wall like you would expect.  In the MEP project, it is not hidden.

I confess - I don't know all of the visibility rules with MEP / Struct projects.

I'm not shure if this works but try: rightclick it and hide in view -> element

Huh???

Your question was not how to hide the element but "...for some reason it's showing on top of the wall in plan..."

Sorry, I know it's difficult to try to explain the problem over text, but I'll try my best.

Here's what I've gathered so far. The family shows up in plan because the symbolic line, which has a diameter of 6', falls within the top of the view range. Thus, as WWHub has mentioned, because the family is a mechanical equpiment and isn't cuttable, it is visible in plan even though the elevation of the family is set to 9' which is outside of the 7-6" view range top. The symbolic line extends the family into the view range. If I remove the symbolic line from the family, it no longer shows up in plan as desired. The reason for the symbolic line is to show the vent clearance in elevation. I'm not sure if there is a workaround to showing this clearance in elevation?

As for the second problem, I still have no idea why the insertion point of the family is at the top instead of in the center. The two reference planes are set to the center and checked as "defines origin". They are both pinned. As far as I understand, that should set the insertion point at that location, but for some reason, the family is inserted at the top every time.

Thanks for your help so far!
