Hi all,

I got inspired by Torsten Ottesjoe's Norwegian entrance (picture attached), and I wanted to recreate it in Revit as practice for creating families. I used the Spline to create the shape of both the doof, and the window on the right side, but I can't lock the Spline into place. I'm relatively new to Revit, and I haven't been able to figure out how to constrain the lines in a way that allows me to load the door into a project. When I try, it says "error: cannot load type "TOttesjoe door". Any advice?

You will learn that splines are bad for a lot of uses.   I don't see any reason why this can not be created by using simple geometry.

BTW - Why do you need to lock anything?  I would never make this door as a parametric door.

I honestly don't know. I assumed that you needed to lock the extrusion of the wall in order for it to be loadid into the project along with the door. When I put the door into the project without locking anything, it gives me the error. If it's not because I am not locking it into place, what is the reason for the error?

We really don't have very much information.

Did you create the door using the door template?

How did you create that funky opening?   The normal door cut will not work.

Is the wall a normal wall?   What is that wall's thickness?   If it is far different than the wall in your family, that can cause problems.

When you click "create new family", I used the Door template. The wall thickness is 6", but I was able to constrict the thickness of the frame to the wall, so it is always flush with the wall, no matter the thickness. I am currently re-making the door in a new file to try out different things.

The first time I made the door, I did not create an extrusion from the wall, which caused the wall to swallow the door when I tried to insert it into a new project. when I tried adding an extrusion to take out the wall, it didn't work, so I started from scratch.

By funky opening, I assume you mean the annotation that will be visible from the floor plans views? I used door cut because I didn't know what else to use. I tried doing something that would be the shape of the door if it were visible at elevations view, but that failed.

So I remade the door & window using arcs of various sorts & now it works when I put it into a new project. I don't know what went right this time, but thank you for your help!

For the door swing annotation, I used door (cut) again, and it looks okay when I change the view height, so I'm gonna leave it as is.

Thanks again Smile

I opened your family in 2015.  Always tell us what revit you used.

Your family is really strange.   There is no discerable opening yet there is an opening...  The wall height can't be adjusted.    I can't figure out how you got what you have.  I deleted everything and yet I still have the hole in the wall.

The standard opening cut is a rectangle.   You really don't want to use that.   You need to delete it and create a void to cut the wall.

Because this door is a one of a kind, it would probably be better off simply modeled in place.
