Hi, this may seem like a silly question, but every month or so I archive our local files. I started doing this after talking to a guy with 6 years revit experience who said thats what he did. My problem is that it is takling up a lot of storage space. Yes I know I could copy it somewhere, but that is still valuable space being used. so my question is this:

Is it neccessary to archive the local files, and if so, how far back should I keep?

Thanks

Why would you archive local files?

Because our company archives everything, and it is what they were doing before I started. The out going Revit technician said that its a good practice to get into. I wasnt sure, but now space is getting precious. I assume from your statement that there is no real need to continue this practice? If so, now I need to try and convince management.....

If you create a new local every day as some people recommend, this would be crazy!

While working on a project, I will make a new local when I think I may want to freeze a copy of the project for possible reference.  When I finsh a project, I typically delete all of these files.  Our central file has archived files at each submission with their backup for any rollback possibility) and our server is backed up regularly.  I see no reason to do anything more.

Good record keeping means you also delete bad data.   If you talk to a lawyer, he will want yo to destry anything that may be in conflict with record documents.
