Hi all,

Ive been having a few issues trying to create a .pat file which shows our proposed tile layouts. I always struggle to get these .PAT files to work correctly.

If anyone could help, it would be much appreciated. They need to be model patterns (not drafting patterns).

  • The first pattern uses 2 tile sizes of 400x195mm & 195x195mm. The layout is as per the image attached titled Screenshot1 and the detail lines in the attached Revit 2015 file (Lobby Flooring Detail Lines).

  • The second pattern uses 1 tile size (either 605x400mm OR 810x400mm) with a stretcher bond type layout. Layout is as per attached image titled Screenshot2.

Much appreciated,

Kristian

Kristian, you have been a member for several years.   Maybe now is a good time to learn how to modify pat files.

Although neither of these are regular running bond patterns, that's a good file to start with.   Find your Revit pat files.   All of them are together in one file but you can copy out just one pattern, in this case I would start with block because the pattern is easy to see.  You will recognize the length and height (and 1/2 length) numbers.  Change one of these, load the pattern and see what happens.

Here is a 1/3 running bond pattern (english) for you to experiment with.

*6X26  1-3rd running bond MODEL

;%TYPE=MODEL

0,    0,0,    0,6

90,    0,0,    0,26,    6,-6

90,    8.67,6,    0,26,    6,-6

Hint... the 8.67 is the 1/3 (26)

Thanks for your reply WWHub,

Whilst i appreciate your feedback, the tone of your first line sounded very condescending.

I may have been a member for several years, but rarely do i come here for anything unless im truely stuck.

I didnt say i dont know how to make .pat files. Just that i struggle to make them work correctly. This is not always the case, just sometimes the offsets and distances all become quite confusing, and when you have time constraints and directors breathing down your neck, it is often best left to the experts who can create a file that works correctly first go, rather than me sitting here for hours trying to figure it out.

In the perfect world, sure, id sit here all day and learn how to create great .pat files, but in reality, thats not ever going to happen.

So again, i thank you for your feedback, but maybe next time keep the condescending comments to yourself. Thank you.

Interesting. TIL you cannot manipulate Line Styles within a .rfa which adds an item to my to-do list ...

Attached is a pattern exported from Revit that was created by HatchKit directly from the pattern template contained in the family file originally posted.

For the time being it's much easier if the arrangement is presented in a project file rather than in a family file so if you are still baffled please post the second as a .rvt  Smile

No worries. Finding Line Syles greyed out in families was a bit of a shock but it seems to be an elemetary defense against the style anarchy that AutoCAD allows when external blocks are inserted ...

But I think we can cater for that. It's on my llst.

What the Heck was condescending about suggesting that you now take another step forward?  That's crap!  Begineers have enough on their plate but your not a beginner anymore.

You should have really read my post instead of having your knee jerk reaction.  If you had, you would have LEARNED something.  Sorry that this is too much for you.

Sorry WWhub but I have read a few of your responses to others and the only way i interpret them is condescending and talking down to people who dont have your experience and knowledge. There is no need to engage people the way you do.

Im sorry if we dont all have time to spend creating patterns all day and figuring out all of the intricacies of the program, but some of us are trying to actually get buildings constructed, not just sitting in front of revit all day. Some of us manage teams of people, consultants, clients, etc and actually getting into Revit for more than 2 hours a day is a luxury.

And yes i am being condescending, but your attitude stinks. Maybe before you fly off the handle, you should understand that everyone has a different situation before you get on your high horse and unload on them.

Whilst I agree with you Kristian13 that sometimes WWHub responses can come across as condescending, I feel you are missing the point. I think it’s great you have such a high opinion of yourself and the work that you do, the fact that you have "teams of people, consultants" is truly heart breaking but WWHub is here helping... last member count... 657,527 people with Revit daily. So I see a little sarcasm as acceptable considering the number of threads I have seen where the question posted could have been answered if they just searched the forum for 10 seconds. Despite these posts, WWHub, as well as others, answer these threads consistently and reasonably quickly.

Your statement "I may have been a member for several years, but rarely do i come here for anything unless im truely stuck." is fairly selfish considering this is a Revit community forum. Reinforced by the fact that you [according to a quick look at your profile] have create 9 threads, but not answered [aka helped in] any other thread.

I joined this forum, like you because needed some help. I work within a small team and quickly became the Revit "expert" so when I have a problem, I have no one here to ask. This forum has helped me numerous times and so I make an effort to repay that help by answering questions where my limited time permits. I have learned a lot by doing this as it has forced me to look into things outside my field. As such, I’ve learnt new and better ways of working. Maybe you could give that try as well?

So, with respect, maybe you should focus on the thread's purpose instead of unloading your work stress onto those who are actually helping/teaching you how to work better? Understand that these threads are seen and used by all members to learn how to use Revit better and should not be used to voice your opinions on other members.

Lastly, WWhub, length of membership doesn't always gauge ability. As people maybe be branching into a new area of Revit. You know what they say about assumptions. Smile

All the best to both of you.

Kind Regards,

Shatner86

Shatner86,

Thank you for you constructive critisosm.

Highlting your points and explaining them makes a differenceto the way a message is interpreted.

I do not intent to be selfish, nor do i have a high opinion of myself. My message was perhaps miscontrued. I was merely illustrating where my time goes, and noting that i am not able to figure out all of our Revit issues, purely due to time constraints. If i had plenty of time to spare, i would gladly sit and learn all of the intricacies of Revit.

I use this forum as a resource to sort out issues when i cant figure them out myself, as most of the time, when i have any, i attempt to resolve them or "use a 10 second google search" to get an answer, rather than bother those of you who frequent this web site much more often than i do.

So again thanks for you comments, i will endeavour to contribute more in return for gaining the help of others.

All the best.
