Would like some help making a family that includes a steel structural column and concrete footing.

The top of the steel column needs to attach to the finished floor level of a building (e.g. named Level 1 at an elevation of 50000mm).  The top of the concrete footing also needs to snap to 50mm above the sloping site topography.

So far, I’ve done the following:

Creating the families:

·         Created a steel column from a structural family template.

o   Bottom of column at 50mm above “Lower Ref Level” = 0mm.

o   Top of column at “Upper Ref Level” = 1000mm.

·         Created a concrete footing from a site family template. (Top of column at 50mm above the Ref level  = 0mm).

Nesting the families:

·         Selected both families as “Shared”

·         Nested the steel column family within the concrete footing family.

Inserting into project file

·         Inserted the columns as site elements into the project file.

The column shows up correctly at the base, i.e. top of concrete footing is 50mm above the toposurface.

The issue is the top of the column is only 1000mm above the toposurface (i.e. difference between Lower ref level elevation and upper ref level elevation in the column family).

My questions:

·         How do I link the top of the steel columns to the “Level 1” in my project while still keeping the base relative to the toposurface?

·         How do I convert the column lengths into a schedule?  (These will all be different lengths due to sloping site).

Sorry for the long story but hope it is clear.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Sorry, columns will not attach to topography.  After placement, you can attach bottoms to reference planes.

A normal schedule can show column length, base level, base offset, top level, top offset.

OK thanks for the reply.

Seems like if I make the columns a site family they won't attach to the building and if I make them a column family they won't attach to site.
