I have created a family (a structural diagonal brace), which I would like to appear in plan with dashed lines above the cut plane.... similar to the way that stair treads appear dashed. Does anyone know how this can be done?

What kind of family template did you start with to construct the family? Structural framing?

I used the generic template

So the family is a static / nonparametric sloped extrusion?
The simplest way would be to draw dashed model lines on the reference plane (in the family) that are aligned to the outside flanges of the sloping member above. The extrusion would mask the dashed lines when displayed in plan, but not above the cut plane. That isn't a very 'bim' way to do things, but will accomplish what you are asking I think.
