So some 3D views have this nice subtle shading.
I can make my other 3d views match it by making a view template of the one I want and apply it to the ones that need it. but I would like to know where that setting is. I simply can't find it.

That "shading" is automatic. Material color changes automatically with the angle from your view ....and light if you have it on.

Sorry. its not the color shading on the surface. its that subtle darkening around the edges etc. if I make a 3d view its normal shading, but I have some that have that extra tonal effect across the surface, almost like an airbrushing tint at the edges...
Edit: found it. under the shading options, its the "ambient shading" check box is on.
