I’m working in Revit 2015.  I have a brick wall that has a precast lintel over the window.  What I have done is used Split Face to draw the lintel above the window and use the Paint tool to change the material.  I am now constantly fighting Revit trying to paint the whole wall.  Every time I make an adjustment to the wall or anything associated with the wall, like say a hosted family (sometimes I don’t even think I touch the wall) Revit paints the whole wall with the lintel material.  I am constantly coming back and using the Remove Paint tool on the wall to clean it back up to how I want it to appear.  When Revit paints the whole wall the Split Face region still remains intact and if I use No Paint on the main body of the wall the Lintel still remains painted.  Any thoughts on how to fix this or a better (and still fast) solution for showing the lintel?  I have attached a picture of my lintel construction.

Thanks

You have discovered that your process was not really the best.  Split face is very useful but it does have drawbacks.  Other options are:

  • Create your lintel in the door/window family.
  • Create your lintel as a wall (or face) hosted family that cuts the host and then either
  •         nest this family in your window/door families (where it can be controlled parametrically by the host family)
  •         place sperately in the project
  •         place in the project and group with the window for multiple placements

I knew Split Face has its limitations when I used it, I just didn’t know it was broken.  Since I was adding the lintels strictly for cosmetic reasons I figured Split Face was the quickest route to go.  If I would have known I would constantly be battling Revit on this I would have just built a lintel family to begin with.  Thanks for your input.   I think I am going to take the 5 extra minutes to build the lintel family just to stop this from continuing.

Any suggestions though on how to get Split Face to work as intended?

It is not broken!

Split face lines must go from edge to edge or be a closed sketch.  When you modify the wall, you are changing where those sketch lines may.  If you only sketch a simple rectangle or circle in the middle of a wall, you won't see these problems.  The problem occurs because of your sketch to these openings.

Use a better process.

Trust me, it's not becuase I am changing the sketch line location.  Everything can be good and I place a wall mounted component on the far said of the wall, no where near my window and the whole wall gets painted.  I can change the the roof that the wall is attached to and the whole wall gets painted.  I can change the image of the material associated with the brick and the whole wall gets painted.  Something is going on that is beyond the sketch line.  If the sketch line was broken then I wouldn't be able to use No Paint on the wall to fix it back to lintel painted and brick not painted.  I would have to go back and fix the sketch line if it was broken(or redraw it becuase I am sure I would get an error message saying it is deleting the split face).

I do however agree with you that it is most likely do to the fact that it is drawn to an edge and not a circle or rectangle completely within the wall.

I probably said this wrong.  It is not that you changed the sketch location.  It is that Revit is a database and I don't know how it stores the data of the wall in relation to the split face sketch but that is somehow changed when you alter the wall.  This does not happen with closed areas - only with sketches that go to edges.

This happens in all releases - not just 2015.

As I said - your best solution is not to do this.  BUT if you must, then simply pick remove paint and click on the wall away from your sketched areas.  The paint there will remain and the rest of the wall will return to the wall material.
