Is there anyone otut there that can help me with diagnosing my journal file to see waht is causing this huge slow down. I have a central file, that is located on our company server, that takes roughly an hour to open, thats only 85megs. i have 4 other revit links, linked in that overall total about 600megs. i know the links are pretty harsh, but we have extremely sweet hardware and i want to figure out what exactly revit is doing while it is trying to open the file. if so i can attach the journal file once it is done openning...finaly. =(. Please o please kind sirs.

The journal file probably won't help.

Do you save/sync from a simple view?  If say you saved from a tiled viewport with 6 3D views all with shadows, then you would cause this problem because Revit would save all of those views and have to load them.  We use a special project description Legend view to save from. << At least that's what we ask.

Have you got CAD imported / linked into your file?  That can slow you down.... Or linked files with a lot of CAD and if those are sub-linked that is even more problematic.

All linked files are better off if they reside in the same folder or a sub folder of your central.

Do you have a lot of vegetation in your model?  These are hogs.  Put them in a workset that you don't load except when needed.

Do you setup so you can use reduced worksets?  We place all linked Revit in their own separate workset.  When loading, you can use a reduced load that specifies what worksets to open.  If I don't need to see mechanical, I don't load it.  You can load or unload it while in Revit any time.

HUB...you are the man, really. i hope i can be the soverign of software that you are one day. I've looked everywhere for some kind of a incline of what could cause it. thanks for the response. I've actually limited it down to the links because:

1) I have a initial drafting view set up to load everytime someone opennings it.

2.)we have no CAD linked in, but we do have 5 large rvt's in there which i'm going to inspect for any CAD material in there.

3.) I'm in the process of taking them all out and linking one by one, and closing then openning it to narrow it down to what file it is.

4.) and in the process of placing all the linked in files in that folder, thats what we didi with the last job, and i got pulled offf this one to model AHU's and someone else left me with quite the mess of a 158meg file that i was able to slim down to 84m. pretty serious.

5.) No vege's. I know for such a exrtacuricular thing they do take up some seriou graphics.

6.) i was curious about that open option specify, cause the time it takes is so serious i didn't want to find out i would have to open the file back up to get links i didn't load off the jump.

on the topic: i have a structural file that has three other structural files linked into it, i know if both:mine and the host struct file, area set to attatchment i can view the links in the link, but performance wise would i be better off linking all four of the files individually, instead of have an "attatchment" host link with all of them consalidated into one?

What are the nested structural files for?  Obviously, if they are part of the model, then you want them but if they are just to support the printed structural files, you don't need them at all.  <<< Why would they have nested structural files?  DUH?   If they are separate buildings then OK - link ea and control through worksets.

BTW - By linking revit in a workset that is noramally off in all views, revit doesn't have to mess with all of that in views where you normally won't show the link.  I'm saying create your workset to be normally off..... Set in on by template or individual VG where needed.

^^ On a similar thread, Teach your staff to pay attention to view depth.  If you have an elevation view, do you need Revit to include the whole building then have to hide most of it???  I don't think that's smart.  And we do even more,  We have our exterior elements in a seperate SHELL workset which is the only workset on in exterior elevation views.  Again, why hide floors, stairs, interior walls etc.

The building is gigantic, and the structural architect, separated them into 3 separate files, and had one "mother" file house them. so we do need to see them, cause we are running pipe throughout the building, and are coordinating.
