You really don't have to. When I find this problem, I remove the family then I rename the material that still exists in the project. Now I can load the family with the correct material.
If you really want to find out where it is, you can use a material takeoff and include enough data to find out where the material was used.

Thankyou I Renamed the layers and created some new ones that I applied to the objects their appearing fine now.
