If understand you correctly you would like to edit the FIXED window that comes loaded in the default.rte. Just go to your Project Browser... Scroll down to the Window Family... right click on it and EDIT.

My problem is with families that came pre-loaded when i open a new, blank file. there is a good family there that i want to use' with some adoption, yet it refuse to let me edit it. other families there, like stairs, are no problem. it looks like a family that come with the software/ is there a way of "exploding" it so part of it can be used with other families?
Thanks for the help
