Is there a way to get the two join together to appear as the highlighted roof that claims it cannot be joined?

They will not join.
Do you really need the roof under that added gable? If not, you can almost do this in one sketch. You just need a tiny portion of main slope to do it.
Look at my plan and you will see how to do this.
