In Revit 2012, I have a jogged section line that I want to break (so that the section line does not go through the drawing, but appears on either side of the building in plan). Once I've broken the section callout line, I'm able to drag the two sides outside of the building. However, the central portion of the section line (where it jogs) is still there, and I can't find a way to get rid of it. It's just a floating line in the middle of my plan, and I would like to make it disappear if possible.

It is not possible ... at least I have never seen or found a way.

I figured it out finally. You can use the split tool to break the central portion of the jogged central line. Then you can drag the middle points to the outer endpoints. The line becomes nonexistent and pretty much disappears, but you are still left with two tiny dots that mark the ends of the central section line. Much better than seeing the whole line!
