I have a brand new, extremely expensive, computer my company bought for me just for Revit use (my 3 yr old computer wasn't compatible with the growing size of Revit). It has all the recommended graphics/RAM/Operating Systems/etc. HOWEVER, I am still having problems with Revit being slow.  It is painfully slow when in 3D realistic view mode with ambient lighting and sunlight checked.  It sometimes takes 30min just to load! This is becoming a huge problem.  What is the point of this "realistic" option if it is too slow to use? Is there a fix for this I am overlooking? What could be the problem?

Sarah

30 minutes to load?????

What are you doing, saving from tiled views with every view set like you said?

^^ Does that answer your question?  If not, then tell us more about your system and file size.

Nope.  I have (1) 3D view I want set up with all the associated textures/colors/lights/etc. I click on realistic mode and it works, but when I go to graphics display and set it to Interior View with ambient light and sunlight, show ambient and sunlight shadows. Once I click OK it thinks, and thinks and thinks for nearly 30 min saying Revit is not responding.  When the page does finally load and I have any changes to make, once again I have to wait and wait for Revit. I have tried everything I can think of, but can't seem to get this "new and improved" option in Revit 2013 to work.

My file is about 34MB.

Computer : Intel Xeon 2.30GH ; 32GB RAM ; 64 bit operating system ; Win 7 ; NVIDIA Quadro 4000 8.17.12.7642 Graphics Card

Interior always takes longer than Exterior. Only use Interior for Interior views. Lights, lights, lights. Put the artificail lights in groups and only turn on the ones you want. High gloss and reflection materials also pays a toll. Turn on the 3d 'section box' and only clip what you need. REVIT actually renders stuff that's outside and beyond what the view is showing you. Hence the 'section box'.

Yes, interior views in Revit have always been a lot slower than exterior views. I am assuming this is due to interior light fixtures. I removed the light fixtures I had in my views and loaded different, similar fixtures that weren't as complex. This sped up the rendering process a bit.

For the interior views I create I typically use the camera feature to get an eye level view. I was unaware you could use the section box in these views as well as the regular 3D view. Excited to try it out. Thanks for the tip!

nevermind I found the section box you were talking about.  I did do a little test on low settings and I did see a different.  I will have to do another test with a different settings.

'section box'?

do you mean the "Region" check that is right next to the Render button?

I just a test with the Region check and i saw no difference in time when I maded the Region box the same size at the camera view.

Wow the 3d section option really does work.

I had a view with 250 light and it took 25 mins on my i7-2700k oc

I use the 3d section option and cut the lights in half and took only 14mins.  Thanks for the huge tip.
