i've cut a partial elliptical hole in a mezzanine floor for a performance hall. it kicks some major....
but i can't figure out how to put a rail (curtain system or wall) on the partial ellipse?

Ah yes....ellipses in Revit can cause problems. Hey until i think 7.0 they weren't even an option though!
I don't think the railing tool will allow you to sketch or pick an ellipse. You may have to use an arc or series of arcs to appoximate an ellipse. I'm not good at the math behind an ellipse but I think someone over on AUGI did some tutorials on arcs that approximate ellipses.
As for the walls and curtain walls, you may need to create a mass in the shape of the ellipse and use the wall by face and curtain wall by face tool.
Others may have more or better advice as I live in a big box world without ellipses.

try to draw a drafting line (use the pick tool) than during the sketch pick the lines... it should work, let us know if not
