How does one make an arch opening in an in place wall component? I am trying to use a void form to subtract it, but Revit only allows me to pick a level reference plane and not a vertical plane.

Please see attached CAD of arch opening, Revit Elevation in 2D showing the inplace wall component, and 3D view of Revit model of what I currently have.

Suggestions/help greatly appreciated.

First of all have you made a vertical Reference Plane?

and Second why are you doing this wall as an in-place component and not an actuall wall?

The foot print of the wall is special so I decided to model it in place so it look more like a mass.  How I set a vertical reference plane?

Personally, I use sweeps for most forms, because they don't care about planes.

Sweeps are better than extrusions in almsot every way!

I guess I am a little confused at what you are trying to accomplish.  As itsmyaltergeo stated a sweep would be a better idea if you are trying to make the door/window TRIM.  The wall will be cut by the door/window family that you put into it automatically

I believe that his wall, the door, and surrounding trim are all modeled in place, or will be.  So the opening through the wall, AKA the arch--needs to be cut as a void...?  That's my understanding.  and I was suggesting using a void sweep, with a profile drawn in elevation and path drawn in plan to accomplish the cut that will house the door.

And then, for any trimwork around the arch, I would also use sweeps that have 3D paths chosen by "pick 3D edge" or whatever the semantics of that command are.

I find this all SOOooooo much easier that messing with a multitude of reference planes and offsets and stuff.  Considering it's modeled in place and has no need for parameters, I'd leave that stuff alone and just model visually with sweeps.

The only problem I've ever had was sweeps breaking when added to groups, and then rotating those groups.  Not sure if that was resolved, because the last time I tried that was back in 2010 I believe.

I would NOT create the door as a model in place.  If you have already created the wall as an in-place component I would actually make a door family (fairly simple if you dont need parameters) so that it cuts the wall automatically, you can create the WHOLE assembly (door and windows) in the family, just seems easier that way to me.  That way you do not have to worry about in-place voids and things breaking/not cutting.  And create the trim as an in-place component sweep.

I wouldn't typically reccomend it either, but with the already unconventional modeling of the entry, it might be past the point of no return for wall-hosted door families.  Not sure.
