Is it possible to cut a hole out of a HSS tube in revit 2013. I need to put holes in one to mount speakers/lights/etc. I've attached a picture, hope that explains what I'm after.

Have you tried a face based void family that cuts its host?

no, I've gotten a hole with the "opening: by face" tool but it goes all the way through both sides, whereas I only need it cut on one side.

I've never tried to make a revit family before, will creating a face based void family be diffucult?

Families are quite easy to make, and open up a whole new realm of revit's power.

If you want, I think you could "model in place" a family in your project--IE, just a void extrusion(or sweep, I prefer sweeps in almost all cases) in the structural column category, and use "cut geometry" with the column while still in the family editor mode.  (it won't let you finish if the void isn't cutting anything yet.)

model-in-place families are sometimes nice, and sometimes a burden--but what's nice is that you can create then in situ, and use the project as a reference.

Modeled-in-place voids didn't cut a structural beam in my project.  Not sure why not--most categories work.

Its - your right, but a face based, fully parametric - width x height x depth family will be useful on SO MANY projects! .. and an in-place is really best used in only one place.

We use ours for wall nitches, floor holes, floor depressions, openings or depressions in any surface....
