The web greeter service is a method to deliver one to one (B2C) customer service from website businesses to their online visitors. The concept is basically a simple translation of the old-time shop assistant method. Much like any shop, when visitors come onto a website, a 'chime' sounds to alert an available web greeter, who then, very much like a shop assistant, opens a chat window to the new visitor and greets them ('hence web greeter').
The major difference in both methodology and philosophy as compared to other customer support systems (other chat, email or phone services) is that with these systems, visitors have to seek assistance in many cases in order to receive it, and most do not do so because of the infamous e-mail black holes and never-responsive 0800 numbers; the web greeter services differ in the way that web greeters proactively greet visitors on a website (after the visitors have stayed on the page for a time). The concept is meant to provide friendly and proactive help, so that visitors have an easy time looking for what they want and have a good (productive) experience on the site as they are directed, assisted and advised by properly trained and knowledgeable support agents.
