i'm trying to make a recessed fire extinguisher family cabinet and when i do a void extrusion it doesn't seem to remove the wall material. when i view it in "hidden" or "shaded w/edges" in a 3-D view it doesn't seem to look right. however in a wireframe setting it definitely subracted a portion of the wall. anyhow, i'm wondering if there's any way of getting around this? .b.

As eldad suggested. Be sure to use the cut geometry tool, select the void then the wall to tell the void to physically cut the wall.
