I'm working in Revit 2011 on a large projec that is casework intensive.  If I eliminate the casework from the building model, the model gets much smaller (142 megs to 38 megs) and therefore easier to work in as we tweak wall locations, etc.  So, in my test I took the building model and eliminated all the casework and saved it as a unique central file.  I then took the casework and made it a separate and unique central file.

When I try to link the casework into the building model, Revit allows me to do so, and when I look at the manage links window it shows the casework central file is linked and all the visibility model items are checked, so it should show up just fine, right?  Wrong.  NOTHING from the linked casework model shows up.

I know Revit doesn't do anything I haven't somehow told it to do.  What do I need to do to make the linked model show up?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

mb

I really don't think you needed to take the casework out of your file, you just need a different process.

  1. Did you think about putting your casework in a different workset and not loading that workset except when needed.  THis is one way to control large files.
  2. Do you rgularly clean-up your file?  Manage Tab - Review warnings.
  3. Have you purged un-used families that you no longer may need?  Casework is usually loaded with multiple types and you may oly need a few types of each family.
As far as what you have done.  Were these cabinets hosted elements?  If so, how did you move them to another project?  Have you opened this second project and is all the casework there in model views?  Finally, is this linked project in the right location in your file - or is it off in space somewhere including up/down?

Thanks!

It was off in the outer limits.  I will try the other options you mentioned for managing file size/speed.  We do purge and clean up the file regularly.  It is a big hospital project and very data and detail intensive.

I try NOT to host my casework families just out of a personal preference/annoyance with hosted objects.  But, I had ceiling hosted cubicle curtains (generic models) I put into my "casework" central file and they came through just fine although now that seems very odd indeed since they have lost their host.  Hmm.

Thanks again for the advice and tips.  I always learn so much from your posts!
