I do not want to have any duplicate types anymore.  When I bring in details from other projects I get this duplicate type warning and then I have things like WELDSYMBL 2 and WELDSYMBL 3 and WELDSYMBL 4.  I do not want this to ever happen.  What do I do aside from making sure all fifty thousand instances on our server are all the same?

After you copy the families, find the duplicates in the project browser. Right click on the types, and Select All Instances. Change them to the correct type, E.G. WELDSYMBL 2 - Type 1 to WELDSYMBL - Type 1. Then you can delete the duplicates.

I'm assuming you are copying and pasting from project to project, and there's no way to stop Revit from creating the duplicate families when you do that (as far as I know). If the details you want to transfer are 2D details in drafting views, you can use the Insert Views From File tool to bring them in, and it will use the families you already have in your project.

Unfortunately even whilst utilizing the "insert from file" option there is potential for the families to be duplicated.

This is most common when dealing with detail component/symbol families that are utilzing instance based  parameters. While this can be caused due to inconsistant family versions/modifications that can be reconsiled through utilizing the current project's family version, even if the family is the exact same version, when it is already present within the project and that instance value has been manipulate in a given instance then inserting a view or copy/pasting from a separate file will result in duplicate families.

I submitted a support request back with RST2008/RST2009 and Autodesk was able to duplicate the issue but has not deemed it that critical of an issue to warrant fixing thus far. This means that it is up to the user to select all instances and swap out as suggested previously, the downside here of course is that the issue is most likely due to inconsistant instance parameters.

For example lets say you have a breakmark family with types for each scale, these are utilizing an instance based  "masking depth" parameter to control the masking region. It is very likely that your project contains more than one of these breakmarks and just as likely that their masking regions have been adjusted from the default value. (Using the create similar tool and selecting an instance with an altered value can do this) Now inserting from view or copy/paste will look at the default instance value within the secondary file and compare it with the host file noting the values are not the same and thus creating duplicate families.

In this example selecting all instances and swapping them out is not an option as it will "adjust" all the breakmarks to have the same masking depth.

The weld symbol can behave the same way but the culprit is likely an instance based visibility parameter rather than a length parameter.

This is definately a tedious task to manage but a necessity unless you don't mind hunting through the type selector or having multiple families for detail components/symbols.
