We do theatrical and AV design and as such we need to create stand alone objects that can be rotated in 3 axis (x,y,z). A good example of this is speakers, which hang in free space (not hosted) and need a vertical tilt angle (pitch), horizontal rotation angle (roll), as well as a a yaw adjustment (at times). I can create a family that allows me to build various size and shape speakers by driving type parameters for length/width/etc. but when I insert them into a model it is impossible to rotate them in section to get a vertical aiming angle (how can Revit not have this basic function??). I have searched all over the web but not found anything that speaks to this situation. Help?!

In the family editor under parameters and settings is a "keep vertical" switch. Un-check that and now you can rotate your speaker. If you need these angles reported, you could build the rotation in your family using shared parameters.

I've tried that, but it doesn't seem to help.

I'm sorry but what I posted does work because I have used it many times. Are you using embedded families? A good tool to help you understand how to build families is the families guide available here: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=13080413&linkID=9243097

My goal is to have a file that contains all the similar models from one manufacturer. This could be used as a stand-alone, but I will most likely want to nest it in another file to reduce the number of items the user sees and to create reporting parameters for certain values. I have attached the base family - if you put it in a project, go to a section view, and try to rotate it you will get an error. Note that the 'always vertical' box is not checked.
