Hi..

I have a 9" brick wall with a layer of plaster and one more layer of paint  - on Interior side.

Now i add a structural column. I wish to have my plaster and paint (the finishes of the wall) around the column in its interior side as well.

Each room may have different finishes. I don't think it will be a good idea to add the finishes around column in the column family as it may take a lot of time and energy.

Is there an easy way??

(please see the image. i have marked with RED, what i wish to do.)

Model it like you build it.  This is a structural colum so it should remain un-altered.  Use a thin wall - brick - to wrap the column.

Another way to make the interior finishes is to make use of the architectural column.  Architectural columns are really "wrapping shapes" that take the layers of a wall that have their property set to "wrap" and flow thos layers around the arch column shape.

In the image attached, I simply added the arch column and it flows the interior finish around the structural column.

The arch columns by defaul are room boundy which may work in your favor as well.

Thanks for replying...

Well, using architectural columns works in a plan. But what do we do about the 3D/Renderings??? The architectural column does not wrap the finishes in 3D !!

They work in 3D for me.  They have a base level, top level, base offset, top offset just like walls and structural columns.  I use arch columns for pilasters and other vertical wall elements all the time and in 3D.

Thanks ! I could see the wrapping of wall in an architectural column in 3D as well now. (i was defining the material in the instance properties as concrete to the column, which is why it was not happening before. )

But If i keep the material of the architectural column as 'By category'. it works for the finishes but it also matches the core layers with core layers.

that means, i will now have to place a structural concrete column inside this architectural column and carry out join Geometry at the junction to get the correct joint ... right??

- Not necessarily, in that plan view use the "filled region" tool with the concrete pattern...

But what about beams??

i guess the above process works well with columns. But when we need the same finishes as columns to the beams.. how do we do that??

It may be very tedious to make differnt families of the beams for different rooms, just because they have different finishes!

do we have any tricks to resolve that??

The year is 2017 now but still all the answers are over when the topic is beams. There is some "tricky way" for colomns but beams.
