the only way I can think of is to create another profile that sits on the face you want and apply the material to it...

Hi everyone

I  have a strange problem , I try to open new thread  for that but I couldn't! So I decided to explain my strange problem with material here. I am trying to clarify the oproblem .Actually the name of  materials of the  other subject change automatically in edit type  to a material that I chose for the  other objects. For instance, when I change a material of one of the wall from stone to wood, click  apply and close the edit property, it is ok, BBBut when I select the other  subjects, wall or floor or ceiling ... and want to change the material of those as well ,  I click on edit property>edit >edit assembly page, what I am seeing in that page ,infront of my finishes is the name of previous materilal taht I applyed for  those wall that I edit before that.  please please help me ,  , I wish I could explain it in a GOOD WAY!

thanks

choona

You need a better understanding of the material process.  Click on the question mark to open your HELP and search materials.  Watch the video at "About Materials" as a start and read the section as well.  It will take some time to fully understand the process.

choona,

I'm sorry but your question appears to only be a lack of understanding how materials work and are assigned.  That is why I pointed you to your HELP.  You need to read that thoroughly.

Pre 2013 - in order for materials to be unique, they must have a unique name.  In 2013/14, you also have to pay attention to assets because the same asset can be used for multiple materials.

WWHUB I use revit 2012 so i dont have asset. About my question, you are right, because this is a unique problem that i have, , when I create any material which dont exist in material library, I gave an unique name to each of them; however, as you know there are many materiasl in autodesk library which come with autodesk products.. When i use one of those , I dont change the name of that, unless i have to change the color or add bump or somthing like this.i dont change the original materiall. Just duplicate and change it to what i want. should i do that? Sorry, but I didn't get your exact meaning about "must have unique name"! You mean that when i use material for evry single object , i have to change the name of material that exist in revit library? I have another problem too. When i change the material of floor , the material of just one wall change automatically. How should i do for this problem? ?? My english is in progress . I try to explain my problem clearly. And try to improve both my english and revit siimultaneouslySmile .

Unique means a completely new material.  When you create a material, you can't just change the name of an existing material, you have to duplicate then change the new material.

What you described in your first post was the incorrect process.  You only renamed the existing material then changed that.  Everthing that used the existing material now used the renamed existing material.

Again, read your help!
