Just now coming across this thread...

For the first question (deleting a viewport)- Try 'purged unused' again.  BUT,  note that custom Viewports are listed at the very bottom of the list under 'Other Styles--> Viewport'.  Only the 'View Titles' are listed in the 'Annotation Symbols' tree.

For the second question (default viewport)- All my views were defaulting to 'Viewport 1', which I guess is the Revit default.  I modified this Viewport type with a new name and our standard view title.  Now our standard view title comes in as the default.  If you've already deleted your 'Viewport 1', though,  I'm not sure how other defaults get set.

Regards!

As an update to this: sometimes when you change a viewport title to the one you want to delete and try to do select all, it won't come up with any others, even though they are out there. Try downloading a trial of Ideate Explorer @ http://ideateexplorer.com/ which looks through and selects things that select all misses. I don't work for them, I've just been very pleased with it as a utility.  Cheers.

Revit will never delete the system view title... which often has been renamed and edited to something else.

It won't delete the original parent file, no, but it will delete unused types, which is what I think the OP was looking for. As long as the types are unused, you can use Purge Unused and Revit will delete them, which is exactly what I just did (with the help of Explorer).
