Here's a great tip on creating a parameter to control a reference line that will be associated to a roof form slope. The challenge is, in the end we do not want the user to 'input' the roof slope in degrees. We want the user to input the roof slope as a factor of RISE / 12 as in 3 / 12, 5 / 12 or even 7.5 /12. We all know the formula > TAN (x) = Opposite / Adjacent, and that's all we need. REVIT has built in operators for both Tangent (tan) and ARCTANGENT (atan) (also known as Inverse Tan) that can be used in parameter formulas.

Why would you need to do this? Just use a spot slope in Revit 2010 onwards...

Hey Chris , I suspect you are missing the point of the exercise and / or I did not explain better. My mistake. I probably did not outline the landscape enough. I'm on a serious parametric conceptual massiing RANT these days and this is about constraining reference lines in order to create a parametric conceptual massing object that represents a roof. After you load the conceptual mass into the project and skin it with the building maker tools you can drive the conceptual mass and model with parameters. There is no built in parameter for rise / run roof slope but there are trigonometry operators like tan and atan. The spot slope works great for regular roofs in a project environment but I have not tried controlling the face of a loaded conceptual mass or the roof it gets skinned with using the building maker tools. It's about controlling the angle of reference lines to create forms in the conceptual massing family editor.

I tried something similar to this, but when I loaded it into a project I couldn't change the slope of the roof without editing the family itself. The formula I made greyed out the parameter I wanted to keep as an instance parameter. So I scratched that idea. Sure this makes the user do the math when it comes to the angle of a slope, but how hard is it to pick up a calculater, divide 1 by 12 and multiply that by 90. That gives you 7.5 to enter for a 1% slope. If you design your parametric mass right, you can do this as an instance parameter. I've posted this elsewhere once already, but here is what I have made for those of you that want to play around with it some.

While on this subject, why can the rise/run only be x/12 or x/1000? Is there a way for it to be 1/40 or 1/100 for example?
